Concept
9-nine- Episode 4 is the fourth volume in a series of supernatural mystery games, with Episode 4 telling a story centered around Noa Yuuki. The entries in the the 9-nine- series share the same setting and world, but each entry focuses on a different heroine. The villainous mastermind is revealed, friends are at odds, the mystery of the Artifacts uncovered, and bonds are tightened through mutual trust. What lies in store for this young man and woman with the power of justice at their fingertips in this installment?
This game differs from the other games in that the story structure assumes that you have already played the past titles (9-nine- Episodes 1-3.) You will be able to enjoy this as a standalone title as well, but we highly suggest that you play this game after playing the other titles in the series. Each game has an independent story that can be enjoyed on its own. We hope you enjoy the experience that is the 9-nine- series.
9-nine- takes place in the run-of-the-mill college town of Shiromitsugawa where an earthquake breaks a sacred artifact from the Shrine of the White Serpent, unleashing jewelry-like items that bestow their holder's special powers called "Artifacts" from a parallel world. When an incident involving a power that transcends human comprehension, Kakeru Niimi, our protagonist, investigates several branches (parallel worlds) in order to settle the matter. With the mastermind finally revealed, Sophitia, otherworldly entity set to reclaim the Artifacts, tells him to defeat this person pulling the strings. The first day, the day that the festival was cancelled due to the earthquake back at the shrine—Kakeru is now equipped with memories from every branch and is on the move to solve this conflict.
Amidst this, a girl with a strong sense of justice from Kuho Girls Academy, Noa Yuuki, has an ability that seems to be the key to defeating the mastermind. Knowing this, Kakeru divulges about the events in other branches to her. All the while uncovering the secrets behind why the Artifacts come to this world, settling the scores with the Evil Eye's User, what will be the fate of these young men and women with otherworldly power at the fingertips?

This is the fourth episode of the 9-nine- series. There's an obvious final boss fight about to happen, and this entire series has been building up towards this climactic moment. At least, that's what I thought. This episode ended up being by far the most disappointing of them all. It does just about everything wrong IMO. By far the biggest issue, simply comes from the nature of the story. At the end of the previous episode, we learn we have an incredibly overpowered ability, that makes failure all but impossible. That removes any tension the story could've had. This entire time, I kept thinking, "Alright, where's the twist?", anxiously waiting for it to come. Unfortunately, it doesn't come until ~80% of the way through, and before then, the story just drags on with nothing noteworthy really happening. (Seriously, why did I have to waste an entire hour of my life reading about them goofing around doing cosplay?) Then the final ~3 hours of the story, which is the only part that really matters, happens way too fast. The last episode and the conclusion of the story. There is a lot of story focus in the beginning and end, between those it's mainly focused on Nao's character, the only one who hasn't had her own episode yet. I feel like the pacing works better than the previous episode, where the fast-paced plot clashed a bit with the slow-paced slice of life. Here the two are more separated from each other and the slice of life content is used as a build-up for the final battle. It feels more like the calm before the storm. I enjoyed spending time getting to know Nao in that way. With this episode being the longest in the series, it can feel like it deos take some time to get to the story. But again, the time waiting is enjoyable too. And when it does get to the story, it's very good. It surprised me a lot honestly and the climax definitely delivered. It's probably my favorite part in the series, which is exactly what you want from an ending, and it really made the series something special for me. Gap moe is not my thing at all, it is incredibly frustrating and it reads like the romance goes from 0 to 100 in this episode. However, I will say this is a satisfying payoff in terms of the overall story. There's a few very... I won't say completely novel but definitely enjoyable twists and turns with this one. I love the villain but it's definitely a ride or die one. If you stop and think or want something super profound, then you're going to end up being disappointed. It's an enjoyable ride, and Noa isn't completely terrible, but I do wish the series had ended on literally any other heroine, as she was by far my least favorite and felt like the least earned romance in this litany of some of the easiest women I've ever seen in eroge.
