Abandon Ship is a FREE mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as a PAID PRODUCT, as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. This mobile app is, admittedly, a bit deeper than your average Candy Crush/Angry Birds/Flappy Bird ripoff that we often get shoved onto Steam, and that's laudable, but there's obvious compromises baked into the core of this game, aimed at making sure it's suitable for iPhones, and that harms the experience on PC. And in this case it's a shame because the industry has struggled for decades to come up with a game as good as Sid Meier's "Pirates!", and I feel this was an attempt to connect that genre with the exhumed and much abused corpse of HP Lovecraft... yep, we're once more making public domain worse by ripping off someone else's creative design and narrative. So, you've got your sailboat, and you sail around, and unlike Pirates!, core game loops work out more like Faster Than Light (FTL) platespinning where you tap your iPhone screen to send your ships crew on various busy work jobs like firing cannons, patching holes in your boat, that kind of thing. an attempt to copy sunless sea if you played this one you roughly know what -not- to expect. sunless sea had a huge map. this has tiny little maps that forces you to fight a set number of battles before you can go to the next tiny map. this battles maybe interesting for an hour or two and then it becomes repetative. its just always the same over and over and over again. sunless sea had a strong atmosphere and lots of little stories. you dont really get even a main storyline here, its just the bare minimum. abandon ship could be a lot better with some more work, some content and acutally less battles but unfortunatly it isnt that way.1 found this helpful
I absolutely adore this game. One you will come back to time and time again starting new playthroughs. Well designed and ultimately customizable. Highly recommend
Best 1st 6 hour, gonna update later
This game has its quirks, but it has a lot of effort put into it. My biggest gripe is probably the music. I think the sound effects used are pretty tasteful but the music doesn't do the rest of the game justice. The bounty system can be very punishing if you get to the two skull level and you don't have enough cash on hand to pay your fine. You get caught in an endless loop of hoping to find an encounter that will lower your bounty level, while its constantly being raised by the influx of ships coming at you. Some quadrants make this easier than others depending on the number of events. If you enjoy roguelites such as FTL, then you will probably get your money's worth out of this game. Just be prepared for some steep learning curves around some of the balancing.
