Adventures of Shuggy

Pretty decent co-op puzzle experience!

Upon giving it another try, this game is, in some aspects, better than I recalled and worse in others. The better part lies in the quality and variety of the levels. While the ultimate goal of each is to collect all the gems to clear them and gain keys to open other areas with their own sets of levels, it’s expressed through many different gameplay styles, with puzzles involving gravity shifts, multiple selves (even with different gravities), maneuvering small blobs, and so on. There are even three dozen levels designed for co-op with a second player. One downside is the graphics: the sprites are cute, but their animation overall creates the feeling of an old Flash game. The particle effect for collecting gems is hideous; it honestly looks better in screenshots than in motion. The other weak point is how slippery and imprecise the controls can be, sometimes even missing jump inputs, which is not ideal for a game where, short as the levels are, you have to start them over if you die - it can happen without you having really done anything wrong. Definitely a platformer of its time. It strikes gameplay reminiscent of Braid, and the other bite-sized Indies of that time. Note, this will crash if you try to tab-out on modern computers.

This is a very tentative "do not recommend". Shuggy is alright. Some of the puzzle ideas are pretty fun and creative, but they're held back by slippery controls and some extremely harsh hitboxes. Adventures of Shuggy is not easy, but part of the time the difficult feels solely down to your movement just not starting or stopping right when you want it to, or an enemy lightly brushing your toe and sending you back to the start of the level. Speaking of that, some of these are pretty long levels. Up to a couple minutes long, the time paradox ones in particular. Dying near the end of one of those, and now having to play through a minute and 45 seconds of the level again to retry the bit that you died on is not fun. All in all I think you could [i]probably[/i] give Adventures of Shuggy a try, if it's on sale. It's cute and Halloween themed, so it might be a fun October playthrough. It's pretty breezy, I finished the game in just over 3 hours, and that was with a bit of achievement hunting (although I didn't go for 100%). But give it a go with those caveats in mind, it's probably not for everyone.
