About All Scars and Starlight

Yuel was born to be the king of Indra.

Ascending to the throne at a mere eighteen years of age following his father's death, Yuel is tasked with running the whole country without being amply prepared for such a massive undertaking. A series of poor decisions damages Yuel's popularity with his people and his own advisors, until Yuel's own cousin, Tavi, leads a rebellion to depose him.

Tavi's rebellion is a success, and little over a year into his contentious reign, Yuel is toppled from his position of power and influence. Brought down in the world, Indra's former king is imprisoned in the palace's prison and left to rot.

Convinced that his life is over, Yuel insists that his older cousin should hurry up and execute him. Indra does not need two power-hungry men vying to be the country's king, and leaving Yuel alive would only divide the country further. Why can Tavi not finish what he started?

Tavi finds himself paralysed, however, with indecision. Incapable of killing his own family member, Tavi chooses to keep Yuel hidden away inside the palace, after convincing all of his advisors that he has put him to death. Tavi wants to treat his younger cousin with a degree of kindness, but Yuel is unimpressed. How dare Tavi try to extend the olive branch after effectively ruining his life: stripping him of his dignity in the process?

Is it possible for the two estranged cousins to ever see eye to eye — and why, despite everything, has Tavi come to care for his younger cousin so intensely?

I’m on my third Yuel/Tavi VN! The boys are back, in a story with choices. Which low-key terrified me due to my notoriously poor play skills. Yet, for the first time ever, I got the happy ending on the first try??? Whoa!!! Every time there was a choice, I asked myself “What would THaTH!Tavi do?” and this mentality did not steer me wrong. All Scars and Starlight is a second spin off AU from All Ashes and Illusions and the final entry in the All trilogy. This time Tavi succeeded in his rebellion, deposed Yuel, and hid his cousin away in the Middle Eastern fantasy version of the cold palace, (or like a Gothic spouse in an attic if that’s your genre du jour). While All Idleness and Ephemera was a pleasant standalone read, All Scars and Starlight pretty much requires playing or looking up a plot summary of All Ashes and Illusions. Otherwise you’ll spend a majority of the story going “Yuel did WHAT?” hahaha Being a longer game with branching paths, All Scars and Starlight has more plot and goes more in depth with the setting than its immediate predecessor. It’s in this review that I’ll admit what held me back from devouring Yuel/Tavi stories…

I enjoyed this darker and bloodier spin-off of All Idleness and Ephemera. There is fluff in one ending but the other endings hit you like a truck in your feelings. Just warning you that death & suicide are present in the game. Overall, I liked it more than I would have because I was genuinely curious about how things would play out between Yuel, the deposed king who is supposed to be dead, and Tavi, the one who took his place as king after launching a coup. There is bound to be juicy conflict in that.

This is such a beautiful, sickeningly tragic story. The visuals are equally stunning, and the bonus chapter has some of the best writing I've seen in the genre, period. If the themes at all interest you, you owe it to yourself to play this.

I really like the premise of this being and AU of Ashes where the rebellion succeeds. Reading from Tavi's POV is interesting as well! Overall very sad and angsty. Reading about Yuel recognizing the full scope of what he did in Ashes and having to sit with that is a really interesting way to explore his character. Onto the DLC, which I'm interested to see how things work out. Still fairly new to Yuel/Tavi, but I'm really enjoying seeing how their dynamic changes in different settings.
