Ancient Cities

Needs serious optimization! No reason my rig should lock up or lag playing this type of game (specs listed below). This should still be in EA and being worked on. I would not recommend this game in it's current state at the time of this review (18 Sept 2026)

Do you enjoy builder style games? Are you interested in history? This might be for you if you answered yes. It's not easy, it's not the usual builder game. Time, weather and fertility inherent to map areas affects can be a boon, or cause a need to migrate. Choosing when and where to migrate is up to you. Interesting map in relation to the time periods the game has, which is adjustable every map. From mountains to valleys, open sea coasts, to dense river valleys, great variety of plant material available, natural foods and wildlife. I have played around 150 hours as I write this. Picked it up while it was Early Access for a great price. Wasn't too sure what to expect. I have really enjoyed watching the game evolve since I purchased it, change, improve, and keep true to it's original design. Ancient Cities. Worth your coin and time.

A very relaxing game. It has improved over the years. Everything feels better than it has been some time ago. Still not perfect, but very playable and a lot of fun. Basically you manage groups for all kind of tasks, build all kind of structures and later in the game start with agriculture. You can be very creative in the way you build your village but everything takes some time and you have a limited number of people and ressources. So you have to be careful, not to give them too many tasks. One of the main task is to build, repair and replace your houses or huts. While you progress in history people will demand better houses, so your city will undergo several rebuilds over the years. The other main task is to take care for enough food. Over time you tribe will grow and gain knowledge that unlocks new buildings or tools. Most of the knowledge comes from emigrants but you also gain knowledge with "learning by doing". Some of the stats are a bit hidden. There is a very useful guide by LadyLillyno in the guides section that explains a lot of things.
