Blacksmith: Dark Times

"Every 2 weeks there will be an update including new content and bug fixes." lol ok Moving past the fact that Blacksmith: Dark Times has been abandoned, the game itself is riddled with spelling errors and improper grammar. The town's design itself is fine, and there were some cool features that I didn't expect the game to have. There was a clear attention to detail and I felt like I was really a blacksmith, so that's good. Problem is, I couldn't figure out how to actually make anything. Fine, not a problem, probably my fault. So I closed the shop and went outside to look for the mine, which the store page says I can mine outside the walls to collect material. Sadly I couldn't figure out how to leave the town or find any mine anywhere. Thought maybe I just needed to pay attention to the tutorial a bit better but I couldn't find any tutorial and I couldn't figure out the controls, couldn't figure out how to store items, etc. Fine, not a problem, probably my fault. So I opened the game's menu and saw a "help with bugs" button, which had some cool features like getting unstuck and finding a hammer. Then I saw a nice "enable cheats" button and clicked it. From what I've been able to paly, its interesting but the tutorials leave a lot to be desired. Like they're unclear and also gone. Once you click "ok" and are able to control your character again, there's no way back. Good luck if you missed or didn't understand something. If they fix the tutorials so that they're easier to understand and allow you to revisit them, then it would be better. For now, try, fail, repeat. That's how you learn.

This game is bad in new and interesting ways. The physics are broken, the textures are horrible to look at, the game mechanics are wonky and unintuitive, the UI is illegible (Bright light green text on a white background??), Save games delete themselves and the game occasionally crashes to desktop due to what I believe to be a memory leak. I could only get the game to stay running for about 10-15 minutes at a time and gave up after an hour. I suspect this was the product of a single junior developer. If that's the case, then what is here is impressive in a way. But this should not be being sold for any price. I hope they treat this as a learning experience and put it towards something else.

Another game dead in early access. Too bad, the idea was good.
