Blast the Past is a very simple VR game with a really specific idea. I am put in control of a wrecking crane and my job is to knock down the last old building standing in a city full of modern skyscrapers. That already sounds like a fun excuse to smash things, but the game adds a small twist because I am also encouraged to look for historically important objects before I completely destroy the building. I like that the game does not try to turn this into some huge complicated experience. It basically gives me a crane, a building and a reason to start wrecking things. The crane itself is probably the best part for me. I have to operate the different controls, move the wrecking ball into position and actually judge how I want to hit the building. I can push buttons, turn wheels and use the machinery instead of just pressing one button to trigger a demolition animation. That makes the destruction feel much more satisfying because I am the one controlling how the building comes apart. The dynamic destruction also gives each hit a bit of weight, especially when a large section finally breaks away after I have weakened it. I also like the little historical collecting side of it.
