About Californium
Taking the form of wacky shenanigans and a first-person experience of a bad trip, Californium pays homage to sci-fi legend Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall, The Man in the High Castle, etc.) by transporting you into the life of a writer who is searching for his own identity. Will you find what’s behind the simulacra ?
Berkeley, 1967. Experience the perils of coming down off acid, a post-breakup bout of depression, and the anguish of a dying career: Welcome to the life of Elvin Green, a science fiction writer in deep distress. Get ready for a sensory trip that will derail your sense of reality and replace it with powerful hallucinations. You spend your time and money on drugs and cheap alcohol, and are plagued by insomnia and struggles with blank page syndrome. Vague memories of your wife Thea and your editor Don bleed into each other. Everything you thought was real starts to crumble.
It would be so simple to give in to the promises of alternate realities, each one more attractive than the next… Will you let these ever-present voices take control of your mind?
Californium plunges you into a psychedelic world, leaving you searching for glitches in the matrix.
Darjeeling, Nova Production and ARTE France are proud to present this downright love letter to the world of Philip K. Dick. Experience counterintuitive art direction by Olivier Bonhomme (Homo Machina), an exhilarating soundtrack by Xavier Thiry, and an incredible performance by actor Paul Bandey in the part of the mysterious Theta.

All about the atmosphere. You start in the middle of the character's life and explore to understand what's going on. The unusual style drew me to the game. Maybe I'd perceive it differently if I knew the things it references...either way going in blind was a memorable experience. The puzzles are not that difficult but I did get stuck at one point and used a guide.1 found this helpful
Game breaking bug, at the end of chapter 3....since 2016. I have verified game files, uninstalled, reinstalled on a different machine, and started an entirely new save. Nothing works haha. I wish I never bought this game.
A single session walking sim about a sci-fi writer in the late 60s ODing on hard drugs because his life fell apart. This is a very experimental art piece with the game part being object find with variable mechanics. It's 2 to 3 hours long. I'm mixed on it but I'll give it a thumbs up because it was thought provoking (e.g. What the hell was that?)
Californium is a surreal first-person narrative experience that transforms paranoia, fractured identity, and unstable reality into an interactive psychological journey inspired heavily by the ideas and themes associated with Philip K. ♥♥♥♥. Developed by Darjeeling and Nova Productions, the game abandons traditional action-oriented gameplay in favor of atmosphere, symbolism, and reality-bending exploration. Rather than presenting a straightforward science fiction adventure, Californium focuses on immersing players inside a constantly shifting world where perception cannot be trusted and every environment feels trapped somewhere between hallucination and reality. The story follows Elvin Green, a struggling science fiction writer living in a distorted version of 1960s California. His life is collapsing under the weight of addiction, creative exhaustion, relationship problems, and increasing psychological instability. Strange visions and unexplained phenomena begin disrupting his daily existence, eventually pulling him into alternate realities where the boundaries between imagination and truth become impossible to separate. The narrative slowly unfolds through cryptic dialogue, enviro…
Excellent design choices. Engaging and fun. Exactly what you'd want out of a game like this. Only 3-4 hours long. Really great idea and very well executed.
Californium pulled me in immediately with its striking visual style and Philip K. ♥♥♥♥-inspired alternate reality premise — the color palettes across different worlds are genuinely stunning, and the voice acting gives the whole thing a professional, eerie polish. Playing as Elvin Green, a washed-up writer unraveling the seams between realities, I found the atmosphere and storytelling genuinely compelling, even when the narrative leans into deliberate vagueness. That said, the core gameplay mechanic — hunting for theta symbols that only appear from exact positions and disappear if you look too long — quickly became more tedious than mysterious, pulling me out of the immersion I was otherwise enjoying. It's a short experience (around 3 hours) that works better as a strange, psychedelic journey than as a traditional game, so if you can make peace with what is essentially a hidden-object walking simulator dressed in brilliant sci-fi clothing, there's something worthwhile here. Go in knowing what it is, watch a video first, and catch it on sale.
