About Chang'an: The capital of Tang Dynasty

Build the real Chang'an city in history

"Chang'an the capital of Tang Dynasty" is a city building game made by myself. Players will come back to the Tang Dynasty of China in 8th century AD, and build the Chang'an city in an 1:1 ratio gameplay map.

From the entire city arrangement to each small Dou Gong in the building, the game design is based on deep research work. I spend years in researching history, culture and architecture of Tang Dynasty and actually travel to Xi'an(which Chang'an is called now).

During the game play, you can create your buildings in each "Fang"(A large square zone that premade by the city), unlock famous wonders like the Great Wild Goose Pagoda, the Qujiang Lake when you reach a certain milestone, and even build the imperial palaces as the bonus content.

A game play map of 81.3 square kilometers.

Different from other city building games, "Chang'an the capital of Tang Dynasty" is more focus on the "Authenticity". The gameplay map is the same scale of the city in the reality. which means a 83.1 square kilometers play map.

From camera control to game UI, many efforts has been made to streamline the gameplay in such a huge map, but when you build the great city in the 1:1 ratio map, the unique experience will worth them all.

Historical sites reconstructed in the map.

Although players can create buildings of residences, commerce and public facilities, in the game map there are still many architectures stand as doodads. Most of them do not actually effect the gameplay, but they contribute to the theme that most important "Build the real Chang'an city in history".

For example, there are numerous city gates in the capital, Someones are huge and famous like Dan Feng gate, Zhu Que gate, while other smaller ones like Chun Ming gate, Guang Hua gate. Their appearances, positions are referenced by academic materials.

3 imperial palaces in Chang'an.

There are 3 imperial palaces in Chang'an: The Da Ming Palace, the Tai Ji Palace and the Xing Qing Palace, I spend much time in their reconstruction, especially the Da Ming Palace, which still stands its ruin in a historical park.

For the Da Ming Palace, there are plenty of pictures and even 3D models for me to reference, and the Da Ming Palace is the most satisfying part of all reconstructions in the game.

Okay... I really, really don't know what to say about this. I will be very brief because of that. - There are good ideas. Not original ideas as everything has been seen elsewhere, but good ideas nonetheless. - It is less of a building game than it is an economic game. You must balance + and - on your budget with buildings limited in parcels. Don't imagine you will create streets and shape the city the way you want. It is rigid and strict, but that's quite historical so why not. - It is quite a beauty. You can loose yourself in those streets. The only downside are the npc that are walking in strage paces and shaped strangely. Use of motion capture or motion capture database would have been welcome here. - As far as I know, it is stable. Yet occasionally some freezes occurs. Mostly while saving, since the save function seems like unfinished. - The interface is good until it isn't : you click on "build" icon and you build a building, then you click on an other type of building but the click you've done that was supposed to be on an icon was also on the map, making you build the last type of building. So : it isn't finished and has been sold as finished. I have a problem with that.…

This is very much a bare-bones minimalistic city-builder that focuses just on its titular showpiece: the massive ancient metropolis of Chang'an. While it may sound like a bad thing, it works for the game's purpose. This is basically a relaxing, atmospheric virtual architectural museum of the Tang Dynasty's imperial capital.

"Chang'an of the Tang Dynasty" is a game I've played for around 8 hours so far, and I really enjoyed the realistic graphics, which were the main reason I kept playing. The music feels authentic and is very enjoyable. The animations, especially the way buildings are constructed, are excellent. I appreciated the option to adjust the game speed—it’s really helpful for gathering money over time while planning the next structure for another "fang" or for pausing the game when you're in debt. The tutorial was well explained, but truly understanding the game's economy required many attempts and experimenting with different strategies to gain a basic understanding. After that, I realized the game demanded much more management than I initially expected. This made it more challenging, and therefore, more engaging. However, the map (both the user interface and its presentation) could use improvement. Eventually, I figured out how to navigate it, but only after a lot of trial and error. When using the map interface, many pieces of information are hidden. A redesigned layout and presentation, where all key details are easily accessible, would be a great improvement. Adding dynamic events…
