Heian City Story

[h1]A lot of good things, but one bad thing make this game a meh.[/h1] This is the third game Kairosoft has made with a feudal Japanese theme, and there are a lot of good things I can say about it. The building combos are a lot, giving you plenty to try and discover. The variety of villager jobs is also huge, too huge, if you ask me. There are also several minigames to enjoy, such as horse racing, ball kicking, and sumo wrestling. And the feature they mostly proud of, is the tower defense style combat system. Enemies will follow the paths you create through your town, so you can design bottlenecks and build a bunch of arrow towers to create deadly kill zones. You can also summon units to help defend your city. There are enough different unit types for you to experiment with, upgrade, and find combinations that suit your playstyle. However, there is one thing I absolutely hate. The achievement that requires you to reach Progress Level 999. It is a horrible experience because the game does a terrible job of explaining how Progress Level is actually calculated. Afterall I had played all the old kairosoft city buiding games, I thought this wouldn't be much interesting. Surprisingly no. Now Heian City Story is my favourite. The management and relaxing elements are really well balanced. I like the music too.

This one is a bit of a mixed bag. It has a lot of systems and is really engaging for the first ten or so hours as you get familiar with everything! The setting and theme is really fun and charming to me, and the tower defense-esque minigame was a pleasant surprise. This title also has competitions with minigames, everything from sumo to horse-racing! It's full of things to do, store combos to unlock, professions to discover, and more. It's really impressive what Kairosoft accomplished with Heian City Story! But as you keep playing, the systems never quite... cohere into a cohesive experience, at least for me. There are many things to do, but they never quite connect to a full gameplay loop the way they do in Tropical Resort Story or Dream Town Island. The NG+ carryover is also disappointing: only the stats of villagers will transfer. Given the sheer volume of things to unlock and scale up in this game, not being able to carry any of that progress forward is unfortunate. Heian City Story has three different maps to design on, but the slog of starting almost entirely from scratch tarnishes the appeal of building a fresh new town. Overall it's still a very solid entry! The last ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Kairosoft game that I hope I don't have to play for a long time. Jesus its just a great value copy of like Sim City on the phones, again no optimization, no better pricing, just the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ price on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ google play store, should you be surprised all this time? Its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Kairosoft, they have like a few bangers, some that could be but they ♥♥♥♥ it up by being generic as hell, having slow gameplay, and still having predatory tactics that you would see from a mobile game STILL in the game even if its on Steam. It's just sad, playing every single Kairosoft game and 100% completing them made me just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate their titles. I hope to never go back to one in a long time.
