About Choice of the Deathless

Battle demons and undead attorneys, and win souls to pay back your student loans! At the elite demonic-law firm of Varkath Nebuchadnezzar Stone, you'll depose a fallen god, find romance, and maybe even make partner, if you don't lose your own soul first.

"Choice of the Deathless" is a necromantic legal thriller by Max Gladstone, Campbell Award-nominated author of Three Parts Dead and Two Serpents Rise. The game is entirely text-based--without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
 • Explore a fantasy realm with a rich and evolving backstory, based on the novels published by Tor Books.
 • Play as male or female, gay or straight, dead or alive (or both).
 • Build your career on carefully reasoned contracts, or party all night with the skeletal partners at your firm.
 • Navigate intrigue and mystery in a world of scheming magicians and devious monsters.
 • Look for love in at least some of the right places.
 • Balance student loans, sleep, daily commute, rent payments, and demonic litigation—hey, nobody said being a wizard was always fun.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the game's writing quality and creative blend of law with dark magic, with some particularly enjoying the romance options and supporting characters. However, the game suffers from pacing and clarity issues early on, with an underdeveloped premise that fails to hook some players, while others find the plot disjointed and the ending abrupt, leaving them unsatisfied with the overall narrative.

I hate giving negs, but I simply could not get into this game in spite of several attempts. OK, it starts in a fight, but then goes back to show how you got there, and I could not get interested in how that happened, or the people gathered at the lawyer's talk-fest at the beginning. I never got beyond that, as there was no explanation of how the MC's education got them into a top law firm and what a law degree had to do with magic. Nor was there sufficient explanation to make me curious to find out what it was all about. I play a lot of IF from Choice of Games and their associated publications, Hosted Games and Hearts Choice, and it is rare that I find something that won't at least take me several chapters in before I decide its not for me, but this is one of the very few I cannot start. Others have obviously enjoyed it because the game has been well received, but for me there was insufficient world-building, and character development to grab my attention and make me want to know more. I would definitely recommend anyone new to this type of game to play the demo where possible before committing to buying an IF game and Choice of games and its publishers generally provide 3 good cha…

It's been a while that I had so much fun with a Choices game. As a jurist myself, I've found the way Law and Dark Magic were connected in this game very amusing and insightful. The writing is very good and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I feel like ive been psy-oped into liking this game The plot is lame as hell and feels like a bunch of ♥♥♥♥ just strung together. and then the story just ends abruptly. I feel nothing. Perhaps that was the real choice of deathless all along

Worth playing for Ash Wakefield's romance. Sometimes the game is a bit confusing with the plot and words used but who cares as long as Ash is in the game. Also, I love the goddess character, she's great
with the whole potted plant thing at the end
.
