Cyrano

This Cyrano visual novel with turn-based combat was a travesty of one of the greatest works of litterature and a personal favourite dear to my heart. Where to start? With the superficial. Character graphics were very simplistic with a few lines in the faces and no details in the clothes, mostly just blobs of colour. Also, the scenes only took up half the screen with no logical reason except to make space for battle instructions during battles, and even then. The story began very late in the true Cyrano de Bergerac's story, after Roxane had already made her choice. After that, we have highlights from the play in the wrong order. Selecting cards for the text of love letters was buggy. Sometimes, once you selected, you could not change it. If you decided to write the text yourself, you could not select a card any more. And the conversion of love letters to experience was so minimal that I thought it was broken. Turns out you had to create poker hands, as each card had a value. But good luck getting a good hand due to unfair battles and randomness. In any case, what you write doesn't matter, no matter how inspired or long it is. I even ran out of space in the letter-writing part even…

This was a great retelling of Cyrano. It took me a bit to figure out the letter writing mechanics but once I did, it was a relatively easy game. The music and artwork in this game was also phenomenal.

I bought this game to support the developers, as I really enjoyed their previous title, Kind Words. Unfortunately, I have to say that this game didn’t quite convince me. The idea is intuitive and the core concepts are promising, but the gameplay mechanics feel underdeveloped. I was also confused by the fact that I kept dying yet was still able to continue all the way to the end. As a result, the ending doesn’t feel truly earned. It’s a shame

I've seen people complain about the combat balance, and they're right, but its pretty easy to get around. It shouldn't have to be, that is a glaring flaw, but it is. You just need at least a pair for your first letter writing segment to get you enough XP to get into an actual flow of advancement. From there, I was able to win every fight pretty handily, even spending an action to steal a card most fights, and only had to burn a card on the big "throw a card" attack like, twice. My characters didn't even go down. As for the game itself- I wasn't actually familiar with the Cyrano story (and would like to see a staging of it now), but this told the tale in charming style. The creative writing aspect of it was fun, though a little luck based, forcing you to get the right cards. This is only really a problem early on, but I did have to fully reset my game once as not getting xp from my first poem started a doom spiral of lost fights which meant no more cards which meant no more xp- it was less than `15 minutes of play before it was clearly in need of a reset, but it would be nice if there were safeguards against that, perhaps some cards automatically distributed if you are below a cer…
