CUPID - A free to play Visual Novel

This was my very first steam game played on my PC back in 2023, so naturally, it had to be my first game review. This piece of art being free was such a privilege to younger me because I never had a steam budget to spend growing up. The first time starting the game, seeing the artwork on the main screen, and listening to the opening score, "Tea Leaf Melancholy," it all immediately immersed me into the world and genuinely altered my brain chemistry. The story beginning with the affects of a cruel mother's words and actions that affects her daughter's ability to live, even *after* the mother has been gone (presumably dead) for a very long time made me feel truly seen and felt playing this game for very personal reasons. The character, Catherine, being a child protégé with the piano, reflected another core part of me: I too am a pianist. Her personality, charm, wit, and fashion sense all reflected core aspects of my own identity - I felt seen through her during a very isolated part of my life. Then there was the obviously very handsome Guillaume, a brooding, yet seemingly kind gentleman who takes on the two young girls to "help" their fortunes. ..I won't say too much on the plot,…

very compelling story, downloaded it yesterday night and finished it this morning in just two gaming sessions. poetical, i took many screenshots of dialogue i found inspiring and beautiful the artstyle is also really pretty. but, if you want to download this game, beware: nudity and sexual content is definitely not the content you should be worried about. this game includes disturbing tropes and questionable relationships. so, content warning for sexual assault, sexual harassment, mentions of child sexual assault, grooming, mentions of incest, and verbal abuse (or any kind of abuse, really). there is obviously also a lot of blood, horror-y stills and scenes, gothic monsters etc, but i'd like to highlight that the gore, horror, mentions of CSA and abuse are put in a specific context which doesn't make it disturbing to come across. same goes for the implied incest, in the game it is considered disgusting to some extent. however... as for the grooming... i wish i could say the same. it is very heavy and very disturbing but never pointed out as such. depending on the ending you get, it's dealt with in a slightly different way but still very normalised. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure how I came across Cupid. It would make sense that when I was going through my visual novel kick this game would show up in my recommended list, however I can not remember anymore. Looking back at my list though, I have discovered that I added this game to my library back in 2018, and it took me another 8 years to play. Even playing it here in 2026, I think this is a fabulous adult dark romance/supernatural/thriller visual novel, though it is not for the faint of heart. Instead of you playing as the MC, you play as Mother, an entity that follows Rosa, one of the main characters. You influence how Mother response to Rosa during parts of her life, specifically how it follows her best friend Catherine and Catherine's fiancé, Guilleme. Every answer has a reward, or a consequence, and only you will learn of what it is down the line. Obviously, with this being a visual novel, it does have multiple endings with many choices that will give you a different response. A religious kind of novel which is kind of boring to read with.
