Darksiders Genesis

The camera angle makes it very difficult to judge height and distance, and the game seems to rely on this mechanic far too often. It feels like many platforming sections are built around fighting the camera rather than the actual challenge. Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy the game very much. The story felt below average and never really grabbed my attention. After a couple of sessions, I didn't feel like coming back. It ended up feeling like a spin-off that never quite lived up to the Darksiders universe.

This spin-off change a main thing from previous games, a perspective; which many didn't like including me. With new Darksiders game on the way i finally bought it and gave it a try and honestly it's not that bad. In this game instead of controlling one of Horsman you control two featuring a new horseman "Strife" and already well known horseman "War". Strife would probably be my favorite horseman because of his personality and Pistol Dual-Wielding signature weapons, but still can't beat the "Death". Strife abilities are very well executed in game, he's carrying as i said dual pistols and dual daggers for close combat. Beside that he also has different type of ammunitions and special abilities such as creating a clone and three tools for puzzles. War has his signature greatsword and abilities both work combat and puzzle solving. Gameplay in general is smooth and combat, however there was time when you do a dodge(Dash) your character got stuck until you jump which is bit of annoying and can cost you a hit, also when you jump out of your horse and do a dash instead of moving forward you will move backward which is also annoying. I have beaten pretty much every Darksiders game I could get my hands on, but with Darksiders 2 bugging out and breaking with the Steam version, sadly not all of them. That is to say, I feel like this game is akin to cold store bought bread. Plain, unsatisfying, and leaves you stuffing your face to feel something in your stomach. A twin stick beat-em up with some jumping puzzles, so a rip off of Diablo 4? I think. But, the loot, and the rewards don't exactly push you to go forward. The combat revolves around HP and Damage so tactics don't feel too necessary unless you want to master the parry with War, but this game is more about Strife, so dodge and shoot. Even the upgrades, outside of the combos and abilities, feel empty. I can now deal +10% damage so I can up the difficulty, but now enemies can nearly one shot me. Basically the combat doesn't satisfy, so why bother trying for more combat? The puzzles aren't too difficult as most rely on you using ability you might no have yet, or finding some hidden object. When Darksiders Genesis was announced, I was incredibly excited because we were finally getting to see the last Horseman, Strife. That excitement faded a little when I realized it was going to be a co-op spin-off instead of the solo adventure I had been hoping for. While I enjoy War and he's every bit as badass as ever, I still feel Strife deserved his own standalone story. That said, Genesis does a lot of things right. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the soundtrack perfectly captures the dark, apocalyptic feel the series is known for. The story is enjoyable and fits well within the Darksiders universe, but it never really gives us the deeper look into Strife's personality and motivations that I was hoping for. He's charismatic and entertaining, yet there's clearly more beneath the surface that remains unexplored. The upgrade system is another highlight. Progression feels rewarding, and unlocking new abilities and enhancements has a meaningful impact on gameplay instead of feeling like minor stat increases. Rough around the edges and maybe a bit light on the story considering the amount of material they have to work with, but overall it was a very enjoyable experience for local co-op. Good levels with secrets and exploration. Lots of things to collect and upgrades to find. Good level of difficulty and decent replayability. The splitscreen camera can be a bit awkward but that's to be expected.
