Desktop Dungeons: Rewind

TLDR; A fun game ruined by having to calculate every single action if you want to have a hope of clearing a level and earning any real rewards. I'd like to love it, however it just takes too much thought process to enjoy it much. Even on the normal difficulty levels you need to be extremely careful doing anything as almost everything you do either adds or subtracts resources which you need around 90% or more of used appropriately to be able to pass the level. On NORMAL. You can litterally waste hours of work due to one misclick or improper action. Add to this that the maps are randomised so you might find that one spell you really need sitting next to you or never find it at all. The game forces you to target enemies above your level just to get enough xp to be possible to win. You need to calculate almost everything, and the meta progression doesn't do a lot to make the game easier for you. This is not an RPG, this is just a puzzle game in disguise.

Ugly and hard to read UI. Cheap 3D graphics instead of well made 2D graphics. What happened to the easy to read and simplistic UI of the original game?!

Desktop Dungeons hasn't changed - it's still brilliant, and will make you feel like a complete idiot when you finish the tutorial. It's possible you might bounce off the writing (it is, however, entirely skippable), but "finger-crossbows" absolutely destroyed me and made me think I didn't want to miss a single line this game had to offer. Hearing bong noises outside the elves' village and fratbros screaming outside the warrior's guild are also two very good memories.

Positive: - From the caricaturistic player portraits, to the fantastically magical sound effects, to the ethereal dungeon lighting, to the cleverly farcical writing, the overall presentation is top-notch, involving all visual and aural elements expertly in ways that enhance the experience while also creating artistic imaginativeness that results in a rare paradigm of the game medium. - Progression stems from beating dungeons and accumulating gold in order to unlock quests and playable attributes, such as the blend of kins and classes, which may or may not unite to generate some synergistic systems. This amalgamative and multifaceted, continuous advancement, is key in expanding the many mechanics while also extending the activities that one may take part in for results and for kingdom expansion. Fun like the others, but not in a "play on a regular basis" sort of way. Get it only if you play it like grandma plays solitare.

This release came free if you owned the original, however this version is hard to recommend on PC. The game looks like it'd read perfectly on a mobile device and yet it isn't, afaik. A lot of the charm of the graphics and the readability of the original icons is lost with the 3D angles and pointless addition of monsters turning in 8 directions (their facing direction has no bearing on the gameplay) if you play this in a fullscreen/widescreen setup it's impossible to glance at the monster, stats and inventory at the same time. the original had a much better layout and control scheme that makes the board and your next move much more readable, while on this version you have to glance at all four corners of the screen to get complete information on your next move.
