DownTheDead is a somewhat incomplete FPS/Adventure game where you fight a bunch of what look like asset flipped zombies in an underground hospital, with the occasional adventure interaction with notebooks and some jumpscares. Despite everything looking asset flipped, this does seem to be a genuine attempt at making a game (only badly), and not some kind of cash grab/scam. The game is supposed to have a "survival" mode but this is missing, and the game version is less than 1.0. It's unclear if the game will ever be "finished". From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" environments and assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 2000's. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the game resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution tha…4 found this helpful
DownTheDead

An Attempt Has Been Made
When I first saw this game, it instantly reminded me of games like Dead Space and Dead Effect. But those games take place on a spaceship. DownTheDead takes place in an underground research facility that is disguised as a normal hospital. The gameplay mostly involved sneaking around and trying to be as stealthy as possible due to the lack of a stable source of ammunition. I mean, it’s possible to take the guns blazing approach if you’re skilled enough with your movement. So, before we get into the review, I’d like to point out that during the game’s early-access stage, the developers were extremely interactive with the players. They read the reviews and made changes accordingly. The game is now out of Early-access. But this didn’t stop the developers from listening to player complaints and taking the necessary actions. Kudos to the devs for this! More developers should be like this. It would aid in improving their games while improving dev-player relationships.
About This Game

Storyline
The storyline is a bit of a mess. There’s no proper narration or anything. Everything is spontaneous if you know wh…4 found this helpful
DownTheDead - A Rough Yet Promising Indie Horror
“A gritty survival horror set in a dark, underground facility.” DownTheDead combines elements reminiscent of Dead Space and Half-Life but with its own indie twist. Set in a hidden research facility masquerading as a hospital, it challenges players to navigate the dark corridors filled with zombies and armed foes. While it leans heavily on stealth, players can opt for the guns-blazing approach if they’re skilled enough with movement—though ammo is scarce.
Storyline and Atmosphere
The story is basic and lacks detailed narration. You play as a test subject escaping a zombie-infested research facility. The plot is spontaneous, with minimal exposition, leaving players to piece it together. While the story feels sparse, the eerie setting and dark atmosphere are well-executed, especially with the zombies' red glowing eyes.
Gameplay Mechanics
The mechanics are simple yet functional. Movement includes the usual running, jumping, and crouching, though crouching feels a bit off due to animation issues. Unfortunately, the game lacks control rebinding options, which can inco…
UPDATE 08/17/2022: So this game has had some major overhauls. My complaints on latency and the animations have been sped up and the animations smoothed out. The overall mechanics have been improved and it looks like they have a lot more work planned. It's enough to ad 1 point to my review and make it into the barely thumbs up as is and knowing it's gonna probably only get better from here. Like Zombie B movies? Like Latency in offline game? THEN LOOK NO FURTHER! Pros: - Zombies have red eyes for easy viewing - zombie vision let's you know where stuff is - Flashlight can turn on AND off Cons: - It's kinda Janky - The controls are not optimized quite yet - I'm not kidding about the latency feeling while playing. Overall it's got the great frameworks of a zombo game but it ain't re-inventing the wheel. And it dosn't quite feel worth the cost to buy yet. But it is still early access so we will see what the future holds. That being said I can only give it 2/5 zombos at this time.
