Dung Battles

I like the concept of a multiplayer katamari style game but this is so unfinished and awkward that it's just not fun at all to play.

Very cute and pretty fun as a multiplayer game. I like the character design and the music showcases some real growing talent. Most of all, I like making the dung ball big. Also I never would've thought of racing in a katamari-like. That's sicc. I think the story mode is a little oddly paced in terms of text box speed, and objectives could use maybe more glowing highlights or an optional crazy taxi arrow to know where to go at times. Some mechanics across the modes are more intuitive in game feel than others. The frog boss is straightforward with a good logic that makes the player feel clever. The water squirt mechanic took a great deal of trial and error for me, but maybe that was acclimation. Anyway, the actual dung battles part is where everything clicks, and I really dig bouncing around with weird things I picked up and then squishing another competitor with a pinecone :)

Dung Battles is one of those games where I knew the idea was going to be ridiculous before I even started it. I play as a dung beetle and roll around picking up different objects to make my dung ball as big as possible. That is basically the main idea, but the game actually turns it into a proper little action puzzle game instead of making it a one joke experience. I have to think about what I pick up, where I move and how I stop other beetles from building a bigger ball than mine. The rolling itself is surprisingly fun. Almost anything I find around the map can be collected into my ball, so I am constantly looking around for useful objects instead of following one fixed path. Bigger objects obviously give me more mass, but I also have to think about whether grabbing something is worth putting myself in a bad position. The game gets more interesting when I realise that the dung ball is not just something I am trying to grow. It can also be used as part of the strategy, especially when I am trying to get around another beetle or protect the mass I have already collected. Battle Mode is where most of the competitive side comes from. I have a limited amount of time to build the bigg…
