It was okay to play. But something I couldn't recommend to anyone else to play. I definitely wouldn't play again because there are far better games on steam to waste my time on.

Exploring the dungeon feels like a circus of goblins, traps juggle fireballs, loot sparkles like fireworks, and every step makes you grin.

A quirky little retro-style platformer with charm. Not huge in scope, but fun to mess around with.

Dungeon of Zolthan is a short but charming retro Metroidvania that nails the nostalgic Atari/NES feel with its neon wireframe visuals and chiptune soundtrack. The boss fights are the highlight — each one has a unique mechanic that pushes the simple run-jump-shoot gameplay in interesting directions, and unlocking new abilities like the dash and double jump gives a satisfying sense of progression. At under an hour for a first playthrough, the brevity is a real limitation, and the looping music wears thin fast. For 99 cents, though, it delivers exactly what it promises: a tight little platformer that respects your time and your wallet.

It presents itself as a throwback experience, designed for players who value straightforward mechanics, clear structure, and nostalgic sensibilities over narrative depth or audiovisual spectacle. The premise is minimal but functional: you descend into the dungeon of the powerful mage Zolthan, navigating a network of interconnected rooms while searching for the abilities and paths needed to reach him. Storytelling is sparse and largely implicit, leaving the focus squarely on movement and discovery. Rather than guiding the player through a linear sequence of events, the dungeon opens gradually as new powers are unlocked, encouraging backtracking and re-evaluation of previously visited areas. This sense of spatial familiarity is central to the experience, as players slowly build a me…
