About Dystobel

-About the game

Dystobel is a metroidvania and platformer game based on switching powers. Use fire, ice and electricity while dodging and nullifying enemy attacks.

Explore the captive kingdom under the rule of Lord Solomon while discovering multiple items to increase your attack, defense and life.

With the change of powers you will be able to annul even the attacks of the bosses that try to get in the way of your adventure!

-About the developer

Hello, my name is Kenneth, I'm developing Dystobel alone, there have been many hours invested in the project and a lot of learning along the way. I have put a lot of love into the game and I hope that can be reflected in the final product. This is only my second game, believe me I am putting my heart and soul into this game to deliver the best I can.

-About the main mechanics
Switching elements (Fire, Ice and Electricity) allows you to nullify enemy projectiles, but there are also enemies that will be immune to certain attacks, the key is to switch to the element that allows you to do more damage while you nullify the attacks they throw at you.

-About the equipable items
During your adventure you will find life bottles that will increase your maximum health, as well as items that you can equip in the main menu, doing this will modify your attack and defense.
Would you rather be a glass cannon doing as much damage as possible but taking a lot of damage every time you get hit?
Would you rather be a wall that barely takes damage from hits but makes the fights last longer by doing less damage?
Or will you try a balanced combination of strength and defense?
Equipping items allows you to adapt the difficulty of the game to the style you enjoy the most.

-About the graphics
All graphics, sprites of the main character, enemies, bosses, backgrounds, effects, are handmade in a traditional way by me. I'm not a professional animator or cartoonist but I'm trying hard to deliver good and smooth animations in the game. I hope you like the result (or even disturb you heh heh heh).

My dream would be to dedicate myself to make games independently, if you want to help me take a small step add the game to your wishlist and if you can buy it at launch I will be eternally grateful. Thanks for reading.

The default controls aren't ideal. The attack button is what would normally be the jump button on an Xbox controller and there is no way to remap the controls. I narrowly recommend this game. It's very challenging in places and feels to me like it suffers from an identity crisis. It's as though the dev is flirting with different genres and ideas and keeps changing what the game is as you go through it, while never being very strong at the metroidvania aspect. Highlights for me were the late game colour-swapping platforming sections and the games difficult (though IMO harsh) boss encounters. It starts out as a basic, mediocre mini-metroidvania (2 ability upgrades that are just different weapons), then after the third boss it does a complete 180 and turns pretty much linear up until the end with the exception of a fork or two in the road. It's in this second half of the game where the dev starts experimenting with different puzzle and precision platforming ideas. There are some large rooms that require you to swap forms (like the colour change mechanic in Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth) and platforming through them is quite challenging. While I prefer metroidvanias, I th…

I really like the metroidvania genre and I really like to check indie games I found this game and the demo leave a really good impression now that I played the full game a have a lot to say. Graphics: Game looks really good and the visual are consistent through the game, later areas are really imaginative and cool. Characters are cool too, especially the bosses. The comic style cut-scenes are a great addition too. Gameplay: Feel influences from castlevania games on the game-play and enemies which is a great thing, the color spells mechanic is really nice and I haven't seen applied on this kind of games before. I like that also have platform style challenges not only combat. My personal favorite part are the bosses, there are quite a lot and really cool and well designed for an indie game. Game can get a little hard later on but I think is a great challenge that makes you really learn how to use the mechanics. Music: purchased the version with the soundtrack and think that there are really great songs, especially the boss themes. others are not that strong but goes along with the game zones. Closing thoughts: I recommend this game to everyone who enjoys the metroidvania…

Dystobel is a Hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania about a subject called "84831" where you manage to escape a cloning factory and bound to find out more about yourself and to become the strongest. The game offers multiple interconnected zones each filled with upgrades, secrets as well as collectibles for your character. The collectibles gives you mainly increases or decreased ATK / DEF buffs and it's up to you to mix them up and find your balanced or strong against weak builds. There is a mechanism called element switching for your main character where you change your color between 3 different elements you're going to find later in the game, and platforming sections / puzzles where you will need constant and quick switching between the elements in order to overcome them. The idea was fun and it will definitely test your reaction timings. OST and music was great, It gave the relaxing vibe for exploration of each screen as well as the adventure overall. The boss fights were super nice and creative, different skill set of attacks for each boss that will test your quick reaction timings of switching element colors to block corresponding attacks or jumping over most as well as positi…

Special thanks to Ken the developer for sending me an early copy. This game has a lot of charm just like kuni ture. Also like kuni ture it has a lot of fun secrets that make your character stronger. The boss fights really shine, all of them feel unique and really exciting. I do feel like the bosses maybe have a bit too much hp and a boss hp bar would be nice although it might take away some of the tension. The art style is very cute and the cutscenes are comic book inspired. I do wish that the controls could be customized because I have so much experience jumping with a and attacking with x (I use xbone controller) It also would be nice to have a dedicated fire button (for instance rt is unused) for swapping faster in boss fights. (I know you can press same button as the form you already are but it's hard to remember in combat) Solid recommend.

I had a blast playing the game, and it's not just the fact that it's brimming with charm. You can clearly tell the world was done in a thoughtful and natural way. It's that the main mechanic works so well and so many fun interesting ideas come from it. Honestly, it exceeded my expectations on how flexible and creative the game design is, especially the last two levels, which pick up the challenge factor in very interesting ways. Also, a BIG highlight for me is the quantity and quality of bosses! It shocked me that there are as many bosses as normal enemies—great world, great charm and gameplay.

Art and level design is pretty good, the power mechanics are interesting and the fast paced combat is really engaging. The only thing I can complain about is the train level, wayyy to RNG based instead of skill based.
