Players praise the solid puzzle design and engaging hidden object gameplay that holds the series together well, along with improved voice acting and character distinction in this installment. However, many criticize the bloated narrative that tries to do too much—mixing the original mystery about a missing friend with convoluted explanations about demons, secret societies, and pseudo-masonic lore that feel tonal inconsistent and padded. The story also struggles with character focus, as Pamela's initial concern for her lost friend gets sidelined as the plot spirals into increasingly absurd terr
In spite of how stupid it was, it worked, and the puzzles were largely good, So I'll recommend this because you can't always guarantee that. This had an intriguing premise, but was let down by it's actual execution. Honestly, if they hadn't tried to EXPLAIN everything, and, at the same time, give us a secret society origin story, it would have been much better. As is, we get stupid, generic rewrites of "demons" and weird, pseudo-masonic knights templar bs that feels like someone was told their game was too short and they needed to fill space, so the game maker just grabbed a pamphlet for the local cult chapter and shoved it in without care of tonal consistency. Your character starts the game worried about her long-lost friend, but by the end she barely remembers or cares about him, because all the cult stuff was treated as more important than actual character growth or even stopping the big bad guy.1 found this helpful
Endless Fables 4: Shadow Within, developed by Sunward Games and published by Artifex Mundi, continues the series’ tradition of blending mystery, folklore, and hidden object puzzle design into a cohesive narrative-driven adventure. This installment shifts its focus inward, exploring themes of memory, guilt, and the blurred boundary between dreams and reality. Players once again follow Pamela Cavendish, but this time the story feels more personal and psychological than mythological. Instead of ancient legends or distant ruins, the mystery takes root in her childhood hometown, where unresolved events from years ago resurface in disturbing ways. The narrative begins with Pamela returning to Mittenwald after receiving troubling news connected to the disappearance of her childhood friend Hans. What once seemed like a tragic but closed chapter begins to unravel, revealing that something supernatural may have been at work all along. As the investigation unfolds, the game gradually introduces dreamlike sequences and shadowy entities that challenge both Pamela’s understanding of her past and the player’s perception of what is real. This blending of grounded mystery with surreal horror gives…1 found this helpful
Game softlocked near the end. I referred to the game guide for what I needed and it seems like you can miss picking up the exotic fruit and crystal leaf items, which will leave you stuck at the end of the part 4.
It's a competent hidden object game.
Oh boy, I was so mistaken. I reviewed the third installment of this series back in September of last year, and I thought that was the end of it. To me, it ended as a trilogy. It was a good ending to the trilogy, but boy, I was so wrong. I found Endless Fables 4: Shadow Within in my folder of HOGs. So, with this review, I hope to rectify that mistake of mine. The Endless Fables isn't a trilogy, it's a quartet/tetralogy. And this game is the true finale to that series. This game was released in 2019. Considering the year of 2026 in time of writing, it hasn't been that long compared to other games released in the 2015s. The increase of quality is noticeable. Voice overs are very characteristic, and there is distinction to each character you interact with. The portion of the areas themselves can rotate (e.g. front to back of a car), but also in some larger areas where one can move from left to right. This introduces a range of unique perspective and depth for the player as they continue to explore. By the technicality, there is indicator for collectibles. Just a small star on the lower side of the screen, not too invasive or distracting to the player. What is unlike other Ar…
Great series. The only issue I came across was one particular soundtrack was 50 decibels louder than the others. Quite an odd oversight.
