This game had the potential to be a decent platformer, if it wasn't for the fact that the devs abandoned this game 4 years ago. The only major change I can see here is it's previous title was Lost Moon. Now it's Engimoon. The BGM and the 32-bit graphics are ok, with some decent animation and effects. But the biggest downfall is the lack of instructions, lack of direction on where to go. I had to figure it all out by randomly jumping to certain areas of the map, shooting enemies and just, anything really. No such dialogues nor story exists for this game either. At least I learned what the term "Metrodvania" means. Otherwise, Enigmoon/Lost moon gets a hard no from me.

This version of the game (last updated in 2016) just doesn’t work. Most of the puzzles are broken and the ones that do work require way too much precision and accuracy to get right while your oxygen level is going down. Despite that, it’s a fine mechanic that would work better with more checkpoints and a bigger map. Because I just couldn’t get past the second puzzle in the game, I had to open it up in JPEXS, explore how the code worked and modified the buttons so they stayed closed. Good thing this doesn’t have achievements; I wouldn’t be trying to do that with this if it did. It’s despicable that the buttons pop up after a few seconds. The exploration is bare bones. The double jump sometimes just doesn’t double jump. There’s a certain point in the bronze pipes level where you just don’t have enough oxygen to beat the bug boss. Like, what? What am I supposed to do here? And that’s when I stopped caring and just decided to idle on the title screen for the trading cards. I just don’t get why the developer hasn’t decided to let us try out their newer version of the game. It’s in early access after all, and I can imagine that one being a much better experience for a full priced £15 …

Enigmoon is a charming metroidvania platformer with solid pixel art and genuinely satisfying puzzle moments, but it's held back by some frustrating design choices. The oxygen mechanic in particular feels punishing rather than tense — having to rush back to checkpoints mid-puzzle kills the exploratory flow that makes metroidvanias enjoyable. Controls can feel clunky, and the lack of any story or tutorial leaves you guessing what you're even supposed to be doing for long stretches. The game has been in Early Access for years with little sign of a full release, which makes it hard to recommend at full price. If you can grab it on sale and have patience for rough edges, there's a decent kernel of a game here — but most players will bounce off it before it wins them over.
