Everlasting: Tomorrow

[h1] One of the greatest visual novels you'll ever play [/h1] This game was originally on my backlog for quite some time, and I regret waiting so long to play it. I have read probably every review for this game at the time of writing this (yes including the one in Russian), and can confirm that they all have some merit to them. In my honest opinion, no amount of words is enough to describe the rollercoaster of emotions that this game was. At its core, Everlasting Tomorrow is a [b] narrative [/b] driven game. The gameplay loop is especially fun in the first few chapters, having a good balance of plot progression/foreshadowing, along with some exploration and puzzle solving. As you progress the story however, the game shifts its focus primarily to that of the story, and doesn't have you do as much in terms of gameplay (outside of quick time events and maybe the occasional puzzle). This leads to what was possibly the slowest feeling chapter in my opinion, being the 2nd to last chapter of the game. 10/10 game that's extremely well written, has great visuals, is consistent in it's storytelling, and has a great soundtrack. My favorite thing are the subtle changes that stay consistent throughout the entire story such as how the characters grow overtime like how Adrian ends up smoking outside and not near people after Damien confronted him only once and many years prior to then. It has some of the most well written ideas, psychological shifts, and story that I have ever seen. There are some things that seem unnecessary, like the door puzzle where all you do is put in the 4 symbols and rotate them slightly, but it doesn't take away from the story or immersion at all. The visuals and music go together amazingly and I actually fell asleep with the menu on and just the music playing. This is the first games that I've played in months that hasn't felt repetitive or like it was a chore to play and try to think about it all came easily and was just a breath of fresh air. I bought this game ages ago and I regret not having played it sooner. This perfectly encapsulates the extremely multi faceted white, black and the gray nature of humanity, the body horror and the disturbing imagery is wonderfully crafted and the mental mindf*ck especially at the last chapter really made me uncomfortable but like in a good way, I really liked Alice in particular here with her story, and although Adrian pissed me off at some points the ending/ arguments within his mind made it worth it. The soundtrack is also amazing, def recommended!

I rarely leave negative reviews, especially for indie games and when the developer is clearly trying something different... however, an honest critique is necessary. I don't want to dissuade anyone from buying this, you should support indie developers, but you need to know what you are getting into: this game has a severe identity crisis. I felt like playing three different games, written by entirely different people, which may be acceptable, if only the quality wouldn't swings wildly from start to finish. The first three chapters are solid, genuine RPG with effective horror elements and well-designed puzzles (the hospital ones are excellent). Despite some bizarre design choices (like a city area with no purpose, or a phone you can only use once) it delivers a highly atmospheric experience. Then Chapter 4 happens, and the game entirely forgets to "show, don't tell." It abruptly shifts into a bland visual novel padded with repetitive quick-time events. The sudden change in tone and gameplay is disheartened, but at least you are still somewhat interacting with it. Then comes Chapter 5. The narrative completely falls apart. This was one of the most enjoyable story gaming experiences I've ever played. Truly a work of art that deserves much more praise.
