About Expeditions: Samurai

Expeditions: Samurai is an expansive roleplaying game set in our world during real historical events, with an intricate, branching story and a vibrant cast of characters. At every turn, you will be faced with life-or-death choices that will challenge your resolve.Create the character you want to be and choose your own path through history. Even the smallest of your decisions can have far-reaching consequences for yourself, your crew, and - in many cases - the people of Japan.

In the year 1600, the navigator William Adams arrived in Japan. He would soon become the first European granted the title of "Samurai".In Expeditions: Samurai, William Adams never leaves England; you will beat Adams to the punch and sail to Japan aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros. You arrive in Japan as the newly elected leader of a motley crew of privateers and are quickly swept up in an ongoing civil war that is nearing its climax. Navigate the politics, intrigue, and drama of feudal Japan as you and your crew catch the attention of powerful warlords whose struggle will determine the future of the nation.

Every crewmate has their own story to uncover - if you manage to earn their trust. Build your relationship with each companion into a meaningful friendship, a lifelong rivalry, or possibly even a new love.Outnumbered but never outgunned, engage your enemies on your own terms in a fast and freeing turn-based combat system where movement, attacks, and interruptions can all play out simultaneously.Use stealth and clever gadgets to toy with your opponents. Split up your team to position them in real-time and set up devastating ambushes. Utilize a vast array of weapons and abilities to maintain the upper hand - from mainstays of the pirate arsenal to iconic Japanese weapons.Craft your own items and experiment with different loadouts to survive deadly and diverse enemies.

For the first time ever in an Expeditions game, experience the tense combat and deeply branching narrative of Expeditions: Samurai in drop-in/drop-out co-op. Play in single-player as your own Captain Flynn, or invite your friend and play as a pair of twins. In co-op, talking to characters at the same time lets you wrestle for control of important decisions or compete for a companion's affections. Coordinate sneak attacks or clever combat maneuvers; throw a distracting firecracker at just the right time to let your partner sneak past a sentry, or execute a flawlessly timed double stealth takedown.

Expeditions: Samurai is such a strange departure from the other Expeditions games. With such a rich setting in history to build from, I can't understand the choice to have the player play as a group of non-Japanese characters. Worse yet, a group of characters that do not feel like they even fit the cultures they're supposed to be from, they all seem like modern cosplayers. The gameplay feels worse than Vikings, a huge step down from Rome. The art style is incredibly offputting. Samurai doesn't have the same realistic gritty vibe of Vikings or Rome, which is strange for a game set during one of the most brutal periods of Japanese history.
VERSION 0.5.2

TL;DR: If you like tactical cRPGs and don't mind early access games, I absolutely recommend Expeditions: Samurai.
My first playthrough of Expeditions: Samurai's early access was a treat. When it was announced, I was originally a little hesitant, as the era in Japan doesn't especially appeal to me. However, when I learned that we play as an English privateer at the dawn of the seventeenth century, with lots of Reformation drama, I was hooked, and grabbed it as soon as I could. This may be an increasingly unpopular opinion, but I've come to really enjoy early access games. Helping the developers squash bugs and seeing your suggestions implemented over time creates (for me at least) a different sort of relationship with the game and its experience. Although Samurai hasn't seen its first major post-launch update yet, I have very high hopes; what we have right now is very fun, and the developers are active on the Discord. At this point in time, I don't have too much to say about the story. I'm enjoying it, but it's far too early to really dissect it and pass judgment. I loved Expeditions: Rome, so I expect the same calibre o…

Dam it was fast. It is first negative review I have written. In first 80 minutes of the game I have encountered black female medic on a British ship. 1/3 of a crew as girls in British and Portuguese nave and female samurai. It is "netflixed" harder than AC:Japan. Until they rebuild it it is wase of money. Pretty shameful, story began to be interesting.

I've enjoyed. Story and gameplay are both fun. Primary complaint I see in other reviews is throwing shade at developers for selling the IP off...not relevant to this game's level of enjoyment. It's a different take but same basic recipe. After playing the last two entries, Vikings and Rome, I think this is a fun entry so far. hard to say too much considering the game isn't complete.

The game is good but requires significant polish. There are people who are complaining about the fact that you are not playing a Japanese characters in a game about Japan but, from my understanding as someone with limited experience in the series, every one of the installments in this series have been about people in an expedition in a foreign land. This doesn't seem like a fair criticism, though there might have been different ways to play out this setting: a Samurai expedition to the Hokkaido, a Samurai expedition to Korea, etc. there are limited ways to capture an expedition set in Japan - one of the more interesting ones being this era of cultural and religious shock and exchange. The art style is good, I quite enjoy it. One criticism I might have is that there isn't enough variety going on, this is good otherwise and one of the reasons I actually got this game and is now getting into the series. It might not be everyone's aesthetic preference, but no choice would ever have been. There's a variety of bugs and clunky controls that I think could have been optimized better. I once spent 10 minutes just trying to talk to someone because my mouse would refuse to register that I'…
