this one was better left in the past. lol but for real i don't just dislike the game. its also a bad port with broken audio and ugly messy cutscenes.

[b]TLDR:[/b] This is a port of the game with minimal upgrades that could be achieved for free with Duckstation and ISO of the original game. Only viable for people that do not know how to operate an emulator in 2026. I appreciate that the port adds some quality-of-life improvements, especially quick-save and quick-load features, which were not available in the original game and make the experience much more convenient. That said, this port feels very minimal overall. There are no significant graphical improvements, and emulators like DuckStation can already run the original game with equal or even better visual results while offering far more customization options. Because of that, paying for what is essentially a very small upgrade over emulating the original game feels hard to justify. Got soft locked in the red against two or three enemies multiple times and got fed up. This game likes to take away your weapons at save points and pit you against multiple enemies with machine guns, while only having a knife. I get that it's an old game and unfair difficulty is part of it's charm. Moreover, this is just a plain emulation job without any interference to it's mechanics and that's fine. For these reasons exactly, the game needs the ability to enable cheats. Cheats that existed in the original PS1 version but for some stupid reason the developers chose to remove from this version because they thought that rewind and manual saves would be enough. They are not. Save yourselves from this frustrating experience.

A charming but utterly frustrating experience, marred by clunky controls and unresponsive inputs. If your nostalgia beckons you to replay this on Steam, know that you're essentially getting a direct port, compressed FMV cutscenes, warts and all, of the Playstation original. However, you are given the mercy of a Quick Save and Rewind function that'll surely stop you from forfeiting before the game hooks you in with its unique blend of survival horror, cyberpunk and adventure gameplay. Fear Effect is an underrated gem that has been seemingly been lost to time and deserves a proper remaster. Updated controls and HD versions of the original character models, FMV backgrounds and cutscenes would make this immediately more accessible to a new generation to rediscover.
