About Felix The Reaper

Felix The Reaper is a challenging single-player puzzle game. You take on the role as Felix, whose job is to make sure that people die. To do this, Felix must work in the shadows and rearrange faith so that death is always the end result.

At its core, the game is about manipulating shadows so that Felix can set up his targets safely covered by the shadows. The core gameplay has a Hitman Go'ish, Monument Valley'ing and Sokoban-like simplicity running through it.

There are three rules you have to master to become a successful Reaper:

Rule #1: Stick to the shadows
Each level is set on a grid-based platform. The squares of the grid are either lit up or in shadow, and Felix has to do his job in the shadows.

Rule #2: Control the shadows
Felix has the ability to rotate the sun, and move objects, to create new pathways for him to reach his target.

Rule #3: Make sure people die
The end goal of each level is to set up your targets and have them meet their maker.

To add something extra to this core game experience, we wrapped it in deep layers of storytelling, death, dance, art history, love and comedy. That way you get to enjoy a wholesome story world, while boiling your brains on complicatedly straight forward shadow puzzles about Death.

 • Challenging single-player puzzle game.
 • Take on the job as The Reaper and make sure people die.
 • Make sure to stay in the shadows. Light is the domain of life. Not good.
 • Control the shadows to reach your target.
 • Enjoy a framing narrative of dangerous love and peculiar characters.
 • Dance along with Felix to an original soundtrack from 10+ indie music artists.
 • Unlock time trials and hardcore levels for an extra challenge.

Felix The Reaper sprang from a fascination with the sprawling, humorous and grotesque art history of Death. Many themes have emerged in the cultural identity of Death, including The Dance of Death or Danse Macabre and Death And The Maiden. We sort of mashed those two themes together in Felix The Reaper.

For the character himself and the world around him, the inspiration was more diverse: We took cues from the ancient TV show The Twilight Zone, medieval painters like Bruegel and Bosch and the cartoon characters of Adventure Time and Hayao Miyazaki.

Another important inspiration for Felix The Reaper was the amazing artistic collaborators in the production. We worked with dancers, a long list of music artists and history scholars.

The Dance

Several dancers contributed to the game's production, and eventually Gunilla Lind and Raphaël Ferdinand Eder-Kastling improvised the final moves that ended up in the game.

Here's Gunilla doing a dance move for Felix:And here's Raphael doing another:

The Music

Of course a game with a dancing protagonist needs great music—why else would he be dancing? We designed the game in a way that lets the music artists be themselves. We wanted them to add to the game through their personal artistic expression, rather than ask them to be what we want them to be. This made for a varied and strange combination of music. But since the gameplay is a non-stressful puzzler, you actually have time to appreciate and enjoy the weirdness while playing.

The Art History

The idea for the game itself stems from art history. We actually started with The Danse Macabre and Death and The Maiden as a basis, and then asked ourselves: How can we make a game about this? Eventually and through several different prototypes, we ended up here.

Alongside the production, a history scholar was diving into the art history of Death across more than 10 centuries for a book manuscript he is working on, and every time he hit upon something interesting he told us, and we tried to put it into the game if it fit. There are five different articles by this historian Søren Hein Rasmussen within the game—you can unlock them as you progress.

Clever games curator review: 5/10. Grid puzzler; pick up “boxes” and drop them wherever, either to cast shadows or activate switches. But step into the sun and die. Unfortunately this game is a triumph of style over substance. It is very highly produced: good graphics, fun music, fun animation, and a pretty entertaining storyline. However, the gameplay seems to be what they didn’t bother perfecting. The task is pretty much the same over and over again, move a box from position A to B. In order to obscure this, they randomly permute what the box is, from a person who “needs” to be murdered to a barrel of beer. But at its heart it is still the same box and the same rules. Indeed, this sometimes just makes it hard to figure out what the win position is, AKA where exactly "B" actually is. If it were just an object-moving puzzle it would be super bland, especially since you just pick up objects rather than pushing them. The major twist is having to stay out of the sun and being able to place objects to cast a shadow. However, yet again they’ve insisted on stylistic choices over making it easy to tell how much of a shadow some…

It has Sir Patrick Stewart! The puzzles are also nice and with a lot of story telling! I played more on phone before steam! It's pretty good, no Steven Sausage Roll, Snakebird, or Baba Is You, but really good, even 7 years later!.

Felix the Reaper, developed by Kong Orange and published by Daedalic Entertainment, is a puzzle game that feels immediately distinctive, not just because of its mechanics but because of how confidently it blends contrasting ideas into a cohesive whole. It takes a concept rooted in death—guiding souls and orchestrating fatal outcomes—and presents it through a lens of humor, charm, and even romance. You step into the shoes of Felix, a reaper working for the Ministry of Death, but his true motivation is far more personal: he is hopelessly in love with someone from the Ministry of Life, and every assignment becomes an opportunity to impress her. This unusual framing gives the game a surprisingly warm and whimsical tone, turning what could have been a bleak premise into something oddly endearing. The gameplay revolves around navigating Felix through compact, grid-based environments where he can only move within shadows. This single restriction forms the backbone of the entire puzzle design, requiring players to manipulate the environment in order to create viable paths. By rotating the position of the sun, you can shift shadows cast by objects such as trees, buildings, and props, effec…

This is a hard review to write. First of all I don’t think this game is for me. I don’t really enjoy the precise tile based mechanics. If you know you like moving boxes on squares then this is the game you were waiting for. I wish I enjoyed it more. It has great art, animations, music and fantastic presentation but it didn’t have any fun parts. I was actually really excited to try this game after watching a YouTube video where the dev discusses the struggles of making this game but even with my sympathy this game is hard to recommend.

I really like the core mechanic of this game, controlling the sun and moving objects so Felix can travel safely in the shadows. However, there is at least one very frustrating flaw. Sometimes it is not possible to move or place an object on the tile that the cursor is pointing at. Instead, the game registers the action on a different tile, which wastes an action. This is frustrating because it forces you to adjust the camera again and repeat the intended move more carefully. Completing the main campaign is not objectively difficult. Sooner or later, you will find the solution through trial and error and occasional sunburn. Achieving three skulls, the highest rating, is also not excessively time consuming. Each level has a more difficult version as well. At the moment, I am not able to fully comment on those, but they seem significantly more complex than the main campaign levels. I also enjoyed the romantic storyline in the game, although I would have preferred it to be explored a bit more. I had a great time playing it, and it has a very unique sense of humor. Overall, I recommend this game.
