Fimbul

I didn't have to play this one for long to feel the painful experience. Combat is extremely clunky and dull. The visuals and level design is bland and uninspiring. The comic type cut-scenes are a nice touch to a story that might be interesting, but without the game-play to complement, it's a big thumbs down from me.

I really wanted to like Fimbul. Was waiting since I originally read about it, I think a good few months or so before its release. The game delivers pretty well on the narrative & Norse mythology. The comic book style delivery of the narrative isn’t necessarily something I’m into but it works. Unfortunately, everything else seems to fall flat. The gameplay is interesting for the first 10 minutes, but then starts to drag on. An hour later and there doesn’t seem to be anything new, just some special skills that are fairly uninteresting, albeit it useful. Combat is stale and repetitive. I did like that you could throw a spear to either break an enemy’s shield, knock them to the ground or kill them. But the nature of the enemies surrounding you doesn’t leave much room for it to be a regular thing. This is also an issue in and of itself. Too many enemies surround you and often attack you midway through your attacks with no ability for you to cancel out. This can be considered part of the challenge but in a modern era where fluidity in combat is (or should be) the norm, it’s a fairly jarring & annoying experience. A nice, short game to pass the time, with nothing particularly noteworthy about it, excluding maybe the art style. Fans of Norse mythology might find something more attractive here, but for others, I'd say get it on a (small) discount if you need something to do for a couple hours.

If feels unfinished. The combat needs polished; it is clunky, unresponsive, and not rewarding. The best part is the finishers but the execution feels like a place holder. It just wasn't worth continuing.

So I was VERY hesitant about giving this a thumbs up, but I can't properly consider it a bad game, just not an entirely good game. This is a great example of why I wish Steam included a so-so rating with like the hand at halfway or something. Thumb thinking about going up or down but undecided, perhaps. Fimbul is visually quite stunning, except for its subpar and quite flat cut-scenes, but its gaming mechanics are generally simplistic. You can pretty much button mash most battles with only a little strategy involved that amounts to rolling out of the way and the big troll bosses, though definitely cool to fight, are the expected "find this and that weak spot and pattern" BS you're already accustomed to, but it doesn't do anything new with it. I cannot justify saying you won't enjoy it, but one play is certainly enough and experienced gamers will probably yawn after awhile. Read more of what I say and scope some screencaps and video …
