Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection Three

Giving this a negative review because neither game will save for me. No matter what I do, the save slot remains empty for menzoberranzan and keeps being deleted for dungeon hack. Not sure why this happens, since it seems to me this is regular enough but some people haven't encountered this issue. Pretty upsetting, though I might eventually try to get it down in one sitting when I get the time for it. Otherwise, both good games for their time, don't expect anything too crazy mechanics wise but it's definitely a pleasant glimpse into what dnd games used to be like, as well as the old dnd ruleset. I'm a big legend of drizzt fan and general drow enthusiast so I had high hopes for Menzoberranzan lore wise, and in that aspect it really did not disappoint, both the game itself and the pretty handy books it has attached to it. I was planning to run a couple underdark themed campaigns for a while, so the books are definitely very cool for that.

I bought this because Dungeon Hack is known to have a weird bug with saving in DOSBox, and whatever settings the launcher has fixes it. It's still a lot of fun and has tons of customization options. Aside from the real-time battle system, it basically plays like a first-person roguelike, procedural generation and all. The other game (not even attempting to remember how to spell it) seems pretty ambitious for the time, but is way too clunky for me personally. Give it a shot and see for yourself.

Dungeon Hack is essentially a Wizardry-like built on the Eye of the Beholder engine, but with a huge twist: procedurally generated dungeons that make every run feel fresh, something incredibly rare (and refreshing) for the era. Menzoberranzan, on the other hand, offers a more story-driven experience steeped in the rich lore of the Forgotten Realms, making it a must-play for fans of Drizzt Do’Urden.
