Players describe Generals & Rulers as an overly simplistic take on grand strategy with a repetitive gameplay loop of declaring war, hiring troops, and waiting for resources, offering little strategic depth beyond basic conquest. While some appreciate its accessibility compared to more complex grand strategy titles, most criticize the game for being boring and too easy, with inconsistent difficulty scaling, broken achievements, stability issues, and AI that swings between being trivial pushovers and making overpowered surprise attacks. The consensus is that the game lacks the mechanics and poli
I bought this game back when it came out, not knowing what the grand strategy genre even was. I enjoyed it at the time, but in the same sort of way an un-contacted amazonian tribe might enjoy Burger King, it was my first taste of a genre of games that I was simply ignorant to at the time. After years of playing other video games in general, and more recently, getting back into Grand Strategy, it's no surprise that this game is a bit...lacking, looking back on it now. The game-play can be boiled down to >Declare war >hire troops >Reinforce invasion >Click "next turn" to get more gold >Repeat. Most of the AI nations are either push-overs, or will naval invade half of your country in one turn because they've been sitting on one island the whole game building an OP army that is 10X their actual population. Not to mention the game progression straight up doesn't work anymore; I remember you used to be able to unlock the 1757 start date by winning a campaign in both Asia and Europe, but as far as I'm aware, it's actually been broken for almost 4 years, thereby rendering a 1/3 of the games content simply unobtainable. There is also incessant crashes for no apparent reason that will wip…6 found this helpful

Generals & Rulers is a streamlined empire-building strategy title developed and published by Hamsters Gaming that sets out to make grand strategy approachable without abandoning its core ideas. Framed around a medieval world beginning in the early 13th century, the game invites players to take control of a nation and guide it through expansion, diplomacy, technological development, and war. Rather than simulating every social or political nuance, it focuses on high-level decision-making, presenting a version of grand strategy that favors clarity, speed, and accessibility over deep micromanagement. The structure of the game is turn-based, with each turn representing a slice of historical time in which players allocate resources, issue orders, and respond to unfolding events. From the outset, the emphasis is on momentum: nations grow, borders shift, and conflicts escalate quickly. Players choose from a wide selection of countries, each starting with different territorial positions and strategic challenges, which immediately influences how a campaign unfolds. Whether leading a dominant power with room to expand or a smaller state surrounded by rivals, early choices often determine th…2 found this helpful
Simple conquest/diplomacy game. Wait for discount.1 found this helpful
I got this game because Alex the rambler made videos on this game, I was intrigued. I saw that the game had achievements, that I think could be easy to complete. However... there's a problem, you cannot actually achieve them. On top of that the game is incredibly boring and way too easy. There's no way to increase the difficulty either unless you play naturally difficult countries. But not even that is hard if you consistently improve relations with countries you're not ready to go to war with at that moment. But once you grow large enough then the game turns from (kind of) medium to the difficulty a literal toddler can beat it without any issues. It was also a while ago when I played this game, but if I remember correctly. The game isn't stable either, like it crashes pretty much all the time. The devs seems to have moved on from this game too 'cause they advertise a different game I haven't played but looking at the stability of this game, i ain't touching that game with a 2 meter pole.1 found this helpful
