Gunboat God

I found Gunboat God to be a fairly enjoyable experience, but certainly not a stand-out in the shmup genre. The game gets full points in terms of artistic direction, which is certainly what pulled me as the simple black and white palette allowed for really fluid animation and gameplay despite being a small indie game. Each weapon certainly feels really satisfying to use with a maxed out firerate (based on your current combo) leading to some solid fast-paced action. This game was also on the easier side for me, although it's worth mentioning there's a hard mode unlocked pretty early on that I didn't play. I was able to beat every normal level and challenge, however I also passed on doing full perfect ranks because the requirements seemed a bit too demanding for some levels. Ultimately I simply liked my experience, not loved it. There are over two hundred levels and the backhalf of the game really slowed down for me; while there were constantly new enemies being introduced, repeat levels became too numerous and it felt more like checking off a list rather than throwing myself at new challenges. Very fun and cute. The silhouette aesthetic is incredibly creative with the creature designs and environments. With a slightly isolated but cozy and hopeful post apocalypse feel, being surrounded by water and rubble for most of the game contributes to this. The gameplay while very fun and replayable with good controls and fun upgrades kinda becomes a bit repetitive due to the length of the game. There is variety to missions but not enough to prevent the game from losing some steam towards the end. The last few missions also feel somewhat mindless, perhaps due to having all upgrades, but they just felt like gauntlets exactly like you saw for the whole rest of the game. In world 4 you also get access to a ghost ability that essentially denies any need to think about using the rocket or submarine ability for the rest of the game. As the ghost can swim and fly just as well if not better, but also has complete invincibility. That felt like an odd choice. Perhaps a choice intended for dread mode but it can be used in normal anyway. Having abilities unlocked only for dread mode also feel odd, and I wish you had the choice to use them on normal after beating the game for fun as well. I a…

[h1] A GAME SO GOOD I ALMOST FELT GUILTY FOR PLAYING IT, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT MADE ME REALLY HAPPY [/h1] I found gunboat god during steam next fest, I was downloading demos and streaming them to friends, this game caught my eye and my friend said he'd heard of it, thought I would REALLY like it. Not only was he right, but its rare that after the first 3 stages of a DEMO am I so onboard with a game so much so I didn't need to play it until it released to know if not just liked it but LOVED IT. Despite that I polished off the demo anyways and adored every second of it... Gunboat god certainly reminds me of other games I've played, mainly LUFTRAUSERS and PATAPON with its gameplay and art style respectively but I feel the sentiment of "despite that its like nothing I've played before" is really a testament to the confidence in this games execution and intentionality in all aspects of its design, because this game is stellar at both of those things across the board, its truly inspired work here. Well, I finally got around to playing this game, played it all month, and just beat it today.... and I only have one major problem with it. Why isn't it getting more recognition!? Seriously, compared to other recent titles published by Fireshine Games, "Gunboat God" has seemingly garnered the least amount of people playing it. It looks like this game has fallen under the radar for most people, and that makes me a little sad—because this game is yet another indie gem to come out this year. When I first played the playtest for Gunboat God back in September, I was blown away by what I was playing. The smooth and snappy controls, the well-thought-out levels, the satisfying sound design, and the energetic movement meshed together into an experience that I still haven't forgotten.
