Owlboy

This is a gorgeous game with absolutely stellar pixel art and a fantastic soundtrack. The story and lore are surprisingly deep, and the Metroidvania gameplay is solid, taking you through a variety of interesting and well-designed environments. I played Owlboy across a Steam Deck, a Windows 11 laptop, and a CachyOS PC, and it ran flawlessly on all three. However, it's not without its flaws. The dialogue can be a bit cheesy at times, and the controls and camera can feel wonky. Also, be warned: if you're a completionist, the minigame required to get 100% of the achievements is incredibly annoying. Overall, it's a memorable experience that's well worth playing, even if you decide to skip the achievement hunt.

Simplistic level design, unsatisfying combat choices between a pea-shooter and an overly-long cooldown weapon, lack of challenge in its combat, stealth, and puzzles, and little sense of discovery. Owlboy is very pretty, but that's about all it has going for it.

I want to love this game. Its really cute, the game play is for the most part decent and the story is cool if slightly disjointed. But I cannot recommend this game. There was always some platforming issues, and with one of the bosses too, where the controls are just not responsive enough and too floaty, ironically enough. Then at the end you have to do insanely finicky platforming where if you fly you lose all hight. Your jump simply is not consitently controllable enough to do it. If it saved each screen maybe you could work it out but its trial and error with a control system that is simply not tight enough for seemless replication of what you need to do. Unfortuntely this is a DNF

First I loved this game. Then I hated it, hated the controls. But the story kept me engaged till the very end. And to think that this kind of cute game would have such ending... I've been sitting in my armchair, completely jaw-dropped. 6.8/10 [spoiler] Otus... :,( [/spoiler]

Owlboy is gorgeous. The pixel art is absurdly detailed — you can tell it took years — and the soundtrack fits it perfectly, all sweeping and a bit sad. The flying feels great, and the companion system is clever. Picking up Geddy or Alphonse and swapping between them mid-fight makes even simple encounters fun to play around with. It's short and not very hard, but I didn't mind. Really liked it. 9/10
