About Heroes of Legionwood

Heroes of Legionwood is a post-apocalyptic fantasy RPG in set in a realm on the brink of annihilation. Combining elements of modern western RPGs with the style and presentation of a classic JRPG, this is a journey no self respecting role player should miss!

Enter a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.

It has been 100 years since the world ended. Human civilization has been devastated by a malevolent force known only as the Darkness and only the last remnants of humanity remain. Playing the role of Locke, a young adventurer determined to save his people, you'll discover a world where your choices have consequences and every victory comes with a price. Can you discover the origin of the Darkness and stop it once and for all, or will you succumb to its influence, dooming Legionwood to destruction?

Heroes of Legionwood consists of three separate arcs: Age of Darkness, Resurrection and End of Days. Either installment can be played on its own, but all three of them will combine to form one epic adventure.

Features:

  • Play as a male or female protagonist, with unique romance options.
  • No cliffhangers! Each episode tells a complete story arc.
  • Deep character customization with dozens of skills and talents to master.
  • Strategic turn based combat with three different difficulty levels.
  • Dynamic and expressive companions who react to your decisions.
  • Skill checks, dice rolls and dialogue options - tabletop style!
  • Branching choices with far reaching consequences and multiple endings.

I feel like this game could have been good. However, the controls are horribly clunky. It's a PC game, but is built for a console. The setup is badly designed. It doesn't even let you go to options until after character creation and opening dialogue. Even then, it doesn't let you or tell you what buttons even work. You have to use trial and error to make the game work. Playing the game felt like waking through waist deep mud.

RECOMMENDED - if you like the free Legionwood Tale of Two Swords release, you probably should just buy this one. You can always try the demo of this game. It has the usual Legionwood level up system that lets you allocate Tech skills and stat points as you wish. You can be a fool like me and max stat Attack if you want. It also has the visualized attack order character icon slider much like FF X that a lot of the newer RPGMaker games feature. The writing is pretty cool assuming that you do not perish from laughing too much at "dark taint." There is a conversation tone system (Self-Confident, Serious, Casual and Snide) that produces varying responses from the other characters during story sequences. There are also Talents that affect the overall gameplay. For example, the Speech one has a lot of applications from getting stuff for free and completely changing the boss battle dialogue and outcomes. There are a lot of uncommon RPGMaker features that make the experience much more fun, creative and less restricted to one optimal approach. The soundtrack is decent to put it lightly. Even the battle themes bear repeated listening. Some town locations lag a little bit despite low CPU u…

"Heroes of Legionwood" is a three-chapter saga that concludes the Legionwood storyline begun in "Tale of the Two Swords" and continued into "Rise of the Enternal's Realm." It isn't necessary to have played the first two games to play this one, because they are set in the past, and the key takeaways of the earlier stories are summarized in a reference available from the menu. That said, if you intend to play through the first two games, it is probably better to do so before this one, as there are certain immediate elements of "Heroes" that intrude on the revelations and outcomes of Legionwood 2. Fundamentally, this is an RPG in the spirit of the SNES/16-bit era, and it is very well done. Music helps create an immersive sense, the battles rarely feel tedious (and random encounters can be avoided), there are puzzles that are engaging without quite getting to the point of frustration, and there's an immersive story. The "Talent" system is a great feature that adds to the game, as are the "Influence" points and the ways in which they can affect relationships between the characters (which have game effects). I suspect there are many ways to play through this game's three episodes…

Crashes the second you take a screenshot, and also the word Taint comes up an uncomfortable amount of times. I had fun with this game, nonetheless. Play it if you're interested in broken to slightly janky indie made RPG maker video games, don't expect a polished game.

If you like enemies that get 3-4 turns to your one turn, this is the game for you. Also, if you like making 3 steps to every encounter, this games for you too.
