About KIN

KIN is a colourful indie platformer, that will awe you with its beautiful otherworldly landscapes and surprise you with its challenging boss fights.

Lively colours, intuitive gameplay and interesting level design set the tone for KIN, in which the player moves through the world as a mysterious, tiny girl with a full head of hair clad in a bright dress. Defeating enemies and solving puzzles, she leaps from platform to platform, travelling through different landscapes.

The game holds an abstract aesthetic that has become characteristic for House of Secrets, the studio behind KIN, through their earlier VR experiences such as APEX and Surge.

KIN supports both the original VR mode from when it was first launched, as well a new camera mode and input system that allows the game to be played as a traditional non VR platformer.

KIN is an utterly fantastic VR platformer that has flown under everyone's radar. Heck, I can't even remember how I stumbled upon it (I think it was mentioned in a single post on a Reddit thread?). But I'm glad I found it as KIN is the third-person platformer I've been looking for. Several developers have made great attempts at this genre (notably Moss and Lucky's Tale), but KIN just feels way fresher and more interesting than those games. As others have mentioned, you play through levels solving simple puzzles and fighting monsters in flashy twitch-based combat to progress. Some parts are harder than others, but overall the difficulty is pretty fair. I only played the VR version so cannot comment on the flatscreen mode, but I imagine it would be more difficult as certain rooms and boss fights were way easier when I was able to lean around to better view the area. If you like games like FEZ and Hyper Light Drifter and would like to see their aesthetics and combat transitioned to a 3D VR platformer, then I'd highly recommend KIN. It is a bummer that it is so short (finished the game in under 3 hours), but I had a blast the entire time. I hope this developer is working on something …

Very nice game visually and looks great in VR. Platforming and controls are fine with gamepad. Currently I'm stuck at the first boss fight since it is very challenging for me at the default difficulty and I already died at least 20 times. But I like the game and I'm happy with the purchase. Update after finishing the game: Actually the game is not that difficult. Even all the boss fights are quite okay after you figure out the right approach. The problem is it might be unclear at first what is the right approach. The gameplay is not perfect but still I recommend this game, especially if you can play in VR.

Man, this is such a tough game. And it's completely expected when I bought it. You can change the difficulty in the settings though--I definitely changed it for the last boss fight lol. All jokes aside, it's a pretty interesting game. You start with a robot and a weirdly-looking kid in a bubble (sorry kid), and you are stranded in somewhere. Major lore dumps happen around the end of sections, though there are still many questions left unsolved. But it's probably an intentional choice. I do like the fighting mechanics and the perspective changes though, they're pretty easy to get used to. Please, do use the mechanic where you fall off the map to regenerate to full HP lol. That's because the dodge and enemies can be very annoying. You're telling me I got knocked off, and that there are three pushers on the same platform? Nahhhhhhh All in all, it can be punishing and confusing and dizzying (especially in cave sections damnit), but I'd still recommend it.

The sword gameplay (slow and clunky) versus the rhythm that the enemies attack in (really fast after very little windup) was immediately frustrating, it's attempting to be like hyper light drifter while really unfortunately missing the combat feel or failing to understand what made that game satisfying to fight in, the levels look pretty but the gameplay almost immediately made me no longer want to play. The first boss just attacks in ways that completely invalidate a lot of your gameplay or control decisions and just amounts to play completely safe, hit it once and run away, that is if it doesn't jump and either instant kill you if it lands on you, or push you far away itself by landing next to you. If the gameplay is meant to be cautious and brutal, maybe that's the point but it missed the mark for my expectations.
