Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns

Can't believe someone took up the flame on this game and actually updated it to work on modern platforms - awesome.

Sometimes childhood memories are best left as memories. Having enjoyed Kohan as a kid I happily picked up the game on Steam expecting a rush of childhood nostalgia. That lasted for the hour or two it took me to get through the tutorial and the first mission of the campaign. Then I got to the second mission and all that nostalgia disappeared into frustration. Mind you, I’m playing the SECOND mission in the campaign on NORMAL difficulty. What I encountered was a computer opponent that can recruit endless swarms of companies that will blot out the sun. By the time I threw in the towel the computer opponent was well into their seventy-something squad. Again, I’m playing the SECOND mission in the campaign on NORMAL difficulty. To add insult to injury, the computer cheats. Your squads need to be within the supply zone of an unbesieged town or fortress in order to regenerate, something that’s just a bit hard to do when the enemy is launching more squads at you than Ukraine launches drones. Not so for the computer, whose squads can resupply in the middle of a forest hundreds of miles away from their nearest settlement. Must be nice! Neutral creatures won’t even attack your compute…

The following is what worked for me in getting the game to work with Windows 10, which is related to the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) settings. Solution: press Windows key + R and type "sysdm.cpl" Then go to the Advanced tab. In the Performance section, select Settings, then "Data Execution Prevention" Check the option "enable DEP for all programs and services except those selected below". Next add to exceptions the "Kohan.exe" file found in the main directory of the game. After doing this, the game is running fine for me on Windows 10.
