Last Chance in Xollywood

The game's creative, and punches way above its weight considering you can grab it for free. Trying to balance the various needs of the movie also gives you a little more to think about than the standard 'how do I get this one specific character to like me/how do I progress down this specific route' approach other VNs might take. It's fun.

"Last Chance in Xollywood" is barely a game, it's more of an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. This is mostly just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This is a poorly written sci-fi CYOA e-book with some gameplay elements, but I think some kudos should go to the author for not making the topic his imaginary anime girlfriend. Instead it's a bizarre and poorly conceieved book about a sci-fi movie director working with aliens in "xollywood", which puts the conceptualization of this junk somewhere below that of the infamous Eddie Murphy flop, Pluto Nash (have you ever seen it? It sucked). Except the production values here are incredibly much worse. And so is the writing. Fantastic game. I loved the story and characters. I was happy with the way it ended, but I still plan to play it again once its less fresh in my mind to see how some of the other choices work out and what the other playable characters are like.

Really ace game! Every time I take a chance on some random game on steam this is the kind of game I'm hoping to find. Really cool music that doesn't get grating and fits well. Great art that conveys different aliens without dipping into tropes or looking random. Plus, if you really like to see story choices come back this game makes you feel every little throwaway choice. (Summary) A science fiction visual novel that is a real labour of love - so many choices, so many outcomes, so much imagination , and so much humour and fun. The core game is free, but I liked it so much that I bought the optional DLC to get another distinctive main character with their unique backstory, and also to support (and thank) the developers. What a gem - or perhaps I should say blockbuster - of a visual novel this is! Often I struggle with such games, put off by the amounts of dialogue to read, particularly if the overarching story is bland or generic. But in this case I was fascinated by the premise of being a film director who's desperate enough to seek employment with a very low budget (and sleazy) movie production company on an orbiting dysfunctional metropolis, which employs a whole range of different (and cheap) life-forms.
