Like James K. Polk, who won one election, accomplished everything he set out to do, and peaced out without seeking a second term, or filmmaker Elem Klimov, who retired after Come and See, having already made the greatest movie he could imagine, Almost Human decided that The Legend of Grimrock 2 was the apotheosis of dungeon crawlers and *poof* vanished. As much as I'd devour a third installment, I can't fault that philosophy. This game improves every aspect of the already wonderful original. The maps are bigger, the environments and enemies more varied, the character creation and progression deeper. On hard, the combat, while a bit repetitive, is mentally engaging. Unexplored areas demand prepared vigilance. The unwary will be beleaguered by enemies lying in wait and waylaid by fair but subtle traps. Both evoke Dark Souls. And the puzzles. *Chef's kiss* Just look at my library; I play more puzzle games than your next jamoke. Even if said jamoke is a puzzler. So with self-appointed authority, I assert that this game's puzzles, especially the optional ones, would hold up in any classic adventure puzzle game. I've read the infrequent negative reviews from the hack-and-slash…

Played it years ago and liked it, but this version constantly crashes when saving.

What can I say about this game, it's the first but more: more varied areas, maps, equipment, character classes etc. It polished the flaws in the first while not subtracting but adding (like adding moving in liquids while not "fixing" the circle strafing tech). Some would say that the game not taking place in a dungeon most of the time sucks, and I'd agree but I don't think a hundred hours of dingy stone walls and the same kinda scenery would be nice.

ETA: Download the "4 Gb patch" or whatever it is called to solve the crashing problem 100%! A very good classic dungeon crawler, it doesn't get much better than this. Only complaint is the punishing skill system, you need to invest in upgrading exactly one weapon skill per character or you will get steamrolled early on, and there is no respec. As long as you know that, though, everything else is near perfection for this genre.
