Even with mechanics this simple, there are ways of setting things up to make the conflicts more complicated than this. As it is, playing the most expensive thing you can and clicking auto attack is generally enough...

Mazes and Mages is a 2D top down retro pixel hybrid of CCG/deckbuilder and roguelike RPG. Explore a randomly generated dungeon and fight creatures. Combat consists of a simplified style of Magic The Gathering monster summoning, where you lay out your creature cards and then set them to attack the enemy mage or whatever they summoned. There are some very clever ideas here that give this game a lot more depth than so many of the asset flips and game construction kit copy + pastes you see on Steam. The game was made genuinely and it comes across that way. Unfortunately there are a plethora of issues here. While the initial concept of the game is good, it becomes repetitive and bottoms out quickly. The retro pixel "art" is quite poor, and also repetitive. The developer chose to try use procgen as a substitute for adding crafted level design and story progression to the game, so the game doesn't really have any content worth mentioning. There's a Mazes and Mages 2 which is a fair bit improved over this. The developer made this game completely free, no DLC or microtransactions. Hearthstone charge simulator. EVERYONE charges. The fact that you always win the coin flip makes it even cooler. However, all the summonings I've encountered have no ablity. Spells are simple, too. I don't know why I have to win battles in such a same way. Go face, go face, and go face. Rather play Hearthstone, or Dream quest perhaps. It's OK to be simple 'cause of this price but adding some basic abilities can't be so hard.

Каждый новый забег ощущается уникальным благодаря процедурно генерируемым подземельям и разнообразным магическим способностям, которые можно открывать и комбинировать. Графический стиль игры минималистичен, но при этом достаточно приятен глазу, а ретро-звуковое сопровождение прекрасно дополняет атмосферу классических dungeon crawler'ов. Понравилось, что сложность игры нарастает постепенно, позволяя игрокам освоиться с механикой и подобрать оптимальную стратегию. Система прокачки персонажа хоть и не слишком глубокая, но дает ощутимый прогресс, что мотивирует к дальнейшему прохождению. Из минусов можно отметить некоторую однообразность врагов и недостаток сюжетной составляющей. Хотелось бы больше контекста и мотивации для исследования подземелий, кроме простого выживания. В целом, "Mazes and Mages" – отличный выбор для тех, кто ищет небольшую, но увлекательную игру, чтобы скоротать время. Рекомендую!
