Mu Cartographer

I like the idea. Enjoyed the execution.

This game is about exploration of something entirely foreign and unknown. Learning to control a machine(?) that is complete nonsense at first. This is why I bought the game because the idea of learning how to control this to properly explore sounded very exciting and intriguing. If I was able to master this machine to work for my own goals that would feel incredibly rewarding! Instead this is essentially what happened: -Started following breadcrumbs by moving inputs to where it told me to move inputs to -Reach a dead end pretty quickly wondering "well what now?" -Fiddle around with combinations of inputs and begin to realize different inputs combined provide progress -Proceed to TEDIOUSLY go through each combination by brute force for what felt like lack of a proper smooth progression (and finding new things as a result) -Realize I will end up repeating this same brute force tactic to complete the game to find a small handful of interesting visual and discoveries that feel dull because of the need to brute force for progress in a reasonable amount of time. -Also realize there is no way I can ever begin to properly grasp how to fully control such a machine like I initially wanted…

well, it really was an experience. a decent game about finding hidden things, including some people's stories and even tragedies. control is unique and fun to understand, observing changes in the landscapes, switching colours of the map and pursuing more details of fictional [spoiler] (or not.?) [/spoiler] adventurers. thank you for this masterpiece, it definitely has a place in my heart from now on.

Little did I know, my enjoyment of it would be among the highest of any game I'd played at the time. This game does not tell you literally anything, rather plops you in with no instruction, nor direction, then has you figure it out. + Clean interface. + Art charmed me. + Unlockable colour palettes. + Cryptic, abstract story. + Captures the spirit of exploration very well. + Figuring everything out was a joy. Rapidly becomes repetitive, and some of the controls are annoying finicky.

I drag icons across the screen without the slightest idea of what they mean at my job. I need videogames for something else.
