Players consistently praise the Murder Is Game Over series for its charming detective mysteries, retro aesthetics, and clever writing across bite-sized 1-2 hour experiences. The main criticisms involve the relatively short playtime, limited interactivity with suspect questioning and clue discussion, and control mapping issues (particularly the desire for WASD movement options instead of fixed arrow keys). Despite these minor complaints, fans appreciate the series' steady improvements and recommend the games as relaxing, enjoyable puzzle experiences.
Just as good as the other 4 games, although it's the shortest judging by my playtime. Really liked that there is a way to pick the killer before the summation scene, felt more like a detective with that little detail.4 found this helpful
Again another absolutely incredible game! The retro graphics are perfect. The detective mystery story and characters are great. There are enough rooms to the hotel so it doesn't feel limited. My only gripe is that movement should be WASD, not the arrows - make it an option or mappable at least. Otherwise a solid game. Love it and can't wait for more. Check out their other titles too, which are also terrific!3 found this helpful
I just wrapped up playing all five currently available games in the Murder Is Game Over series -- and all five have been a delight. If you want to pass the time indulging in bite-size mysteries with cute and clever writing, plus the occasional drama, that's certainly what you'll get in this series. Having played all of these two-hour games in just a few days, I particularly appreciate the improvements each installment has offered. I'm not ashamed to admit that I put both The Blackinton Curse and Murder Otaku on Cozy mode, because I get no enjoyment from chase sequences. The RPGM environments are effectively used -- I liked Murder Otaku's view to the first floor from the upper floors of the hotel -- and the hunt for doggie bags is always fun. As for the mysteries themselves, I definitely appreciate the increasing detail and relative complexity of the storytelling, the characters' backstories, and the twists from game to game. I've seen some things in the writing (both from a technical standpoint and from a plot perspective) that kind of bother me, including
the killer's reason for revenge in Murder Otaku
, but those things don't…2 found this helpful
Initially, I wasn't excited for this game, because as a noted EX-Weeaboo, a game set at an anime con wasn't up my alley the same way as one on Cape Cod-by-any-other-name or in an isolated hotel in the Alps. But the setting in a gothic 1920s hotel actually offers it a really nice aesthetic. It feels like we've hit a point where the dev is integrating all the little mechanics of the games (e.g., the riddles, the mini-games) so that they feel like part of the narrative. I do wish there had been more discovering clues and talking to suspects - e.g., after finding the riddle, I would have liked to ask Betty about it, and I'd have liked for more floors to be made available in the elevator as the case went on. But I know those would have resulted in a much longer game than the 1-1.5 hour runtime of this series. My other complaints are really nitpicks that aren't even worth going into. I am getting worried about Cleo eating chocolate, however, after her Neapolitan gelato and now Pocky...1 found this helpful
Another lightweight mystery in the "Murder is Game Over" series. Personally, I enjoy these stories and it's a nice way to pass some time and relax.1 found this helpful
yet another great installment in the series. same working formula, different settings, different story. some familiar characters from fromer games are always present. the ending was surprising, yet it made sense. the studio has yet to disappoint. not that i think it ever will.1 found this helpful
