Upon extinguishing six curses, one is rewarded with the transition to Phase 2, heralded by the dulcet tones of ice cream truck music. Should this music ever cease, Chuck Norris himself will materialize with singular focus on one's testicles. After mine were duly removed, my friend and I decided to conclude our session — his having suffered the same fate. It took us nearly two hours to light six curses, since the entire experience is presented exclusively in Chinese, regardless of whether one selects English, German, French, or any other language setting. Mysterious School is a creepy little horror game that I found more interesting when I approached it as a mystery rather than just a monster game. I explore an abandoned school where a girl who died there continues to appear at night, leaving behind the same desperate message. I liked the setup because there is a clear question behind the horror. I am not simply trying to survive, I am trying to understand what happened and help her soul find peace. The gameplay combines exploration with combat and investigation. I move through the school with another player when playing cooperatively, search for clues and deal with supernatural threats along the way. The need to find and destroy the objects influencing the girl's spirit gives the exploration a clear purpose. I enjoyed gradually understanding what was happening instead of being told the entire story immediately. The cooperative side is one of the more appealing features for me. Exploring a haunted school with another person naturally creates a different kind of tension because we have to keep track of each other while searching the environment. For what it is this game is absolutely spectacular! Sadly the ingame purchases and the missing translation are limiting the potential this game could have on the broader market of the gaming industry. Especially the well designed gameplay loop of searching for a key and then finding the exact three items you just found before is extremely uplifting and exciting to complete a lot of times in a row. And the singing of the female ghost is so scary, just like the jumpscares she gives. On the other hand the oversexualization of women in this game is saddening. All in all: great game and hidden gem, especially if you like your games to be exhausting and not fun. 8/10 LG
