About No Pineapple Left Behind

In No Pineapple Left Behind, you have to run a school full of children. Children have lots of wants, needs, and feelings. That's a problem, because if they get don't pay attention in class and get low grades, your school loses money. However, you can turn children into pineapples. All that pineapples do is take tests and get grades. They do not have feelings and are not people, but they are much simpler to handle, and therefore much cheaper.

Features:

  • Learn about the shortcomings of modern education in this satirical game
  • Nine schools, each with unique challenges
  • Manage the school's curriculums, students, and staff without going bankrupt
  • Dehumanize the children, turning them into orderly pineapples
  • Maintain a small staff of top-tier teachers or a large group of burned-out, underpaid teachers
  • Manipulate a child's feelings with lasers
  • Cast magic spells like "Trigonomancy" or "Covalency" to teach students
  • Address parental concerns, or maybe ignore them altogether

Mixed. It is an interesting idea and concept, just not executed as well as I would prefer. Most of the day is idle and at full speed, with a few select times where I pause every other second to efficiently use teacher energy. Some of the scenarios seem to be designed with the intent of failing, which is maybe the way the developer wanted to drive the point of the game home. In the end it gets tedious. This is better to be viewed as political art more so than a game, at that point I can understand the allure it may have. Good idea, not that great of an implementation.

This review section is in dire need of a sense of humour, but they summarised it perfectly. A school management game where you lobotomise your students in the name of academic performance is a very solid concept, but the gameplay is repetitive and takes way too long, and the fast forward button is bugged. I had fun, but I can't guarantee you would too.

No Pineapple Left Behind shines in the two most powerful aspects of video games, its gameplay and the narrative that it tells. Both should be enough to hook anyone, with stylistic choices reflecting both the story and the focus on student management in modern schools. While creating a game that’s actually fun to play, Subaltern Games took the opportunity to say something, and in doing so, managed a haunting reflection of modern education.
