Nurikabe

I cannot recommend this game. As of the writing of this game, there are too many features that have been left out of this game that allow for me to recommend this game at this point in time. First, within the first eleven minutes of playtime, I got three duplicate 8x8 boards. If you tout a game as having over 50,000 unique puzzles to solve, this cannot happen. Second, also within the first eleven minutes of playtime, there was no tutorial and no information given on the controls of the game or how to play the game. For new players, this would turn them off almost immediately. Third, and most importantly, the board sizes are too limited and the difficulty settings, from what I could tell, were non-existent. Finally, there was no ability to change the volume of either the sound effects or music to anything other than on and off. This was the most frustrating aspect of this game for me. Overall, I cannot recommend this game.

Since the maximum size is 8x8 and there is no way to adjust the difficulty other than the size, once you get used to the rules all the puzzles can be solved in about a minute.

Nurikabe is a Mineweeper-like puzzle game in which you need to deduce what cells are part of islands and what cells are part of the sea. Grid sizes range from 4x4 to 8x8, which some people will find to be too small to be challenging. I recommend this game if you enjoy puzzles and you enjoy Minesweeper, but the game is not without its shortcomings. The only options are sound on/off and music on/off; there are no volume sliders for the sound or music. The biggest problem, however, is that the game runs in a window only -- there is no option for full-screen -- and the window is a fixed size (1000x776) which is too large to fit on a standard 1366x768 (720P) monitor. The game is still playable on a 720P monitor, but the bottom half of the action buttons (pause, restart, done, and new) will be cut off. Despite those shortcomings, given the price and the potential for enjoyment, I still recommend this game.

At the time of writing, this is the only Nurikabe game on Steam that I could find. I've enjoyed nurikabe ever since I discovered it years ago online, and just felt like trying to find a downloadable version on Steam for whatever reason. This is basic, but you can't beat the price. The interface is simple and feels clean to me. I haven't played long enough to know if there are bugs, but first impression is that the program feels lite and reliable. Nurikabe is a logic puzzle game that will probably be enjoyed by pretty much anyone who finds minesweeper fun. The flavor is different but the overall nature of the problem is similar - you use deduction to figure out which tiles should be white or black, and there are a number of tricks you can learn that combine to make the puzzle solvable. I only have one strong complaint: I would like to be able to solve larger puzzles (max is 8x8), and hope the addition would be simple enough to be added as an update at some point. On the website I've used in the past to play nurikabe, it is possible to play grids of size 20x20 as well as different difficulty levels, higher difficulties sometimes containing larger white islands. These larger islands…

Fun little game. wish there was a bigger version...
