First released in 2009, One Night is a survival horror game that combines the gameplay of Playstation-era classics such as Resident Evil and Parasite Eve with a 16-bit aesthetic inspired by modern indie games. At long last, this RPG Maker classic comes to Steam as One Night: Ultimate Edition, updated with a brand new engine, overhauled gameplay mechanics and a completely rewritten storyline.
Set in an alternate version of the year 2012, One Night challenges you to escape from a top-secret research facility known only as "The Complex", a place fallen to forces that defy explanation. Everybody you knew is dead, and something has gone terribly wrong. Now relentless monsters and fiendish puzzles await you around every corner as you attempt to make your escape from a literal Hell on Earth.

I feel like a jerk when it's free but at the same time I think there's lots of free games on Steam that I have zero problem recommending, so here we are. There's a lot of love here, and it's fun at first to make your way through albeit some of the puzzles involve math LOL. But what stopped me from continuing is the complete absence of any kind of map. It's not that the game is that big, but you move slowly, and enemies constantly respawn and move erratically so combine that with wandering aimlessly if you're not sure where to go it gets frustrating. Add to that environments feel very samey, and there's even one way shortcuts that should you take to get to a prior location, means remembering the exact way to get back to that later location. Honestly it just needs a map. I guess this is where someone is going to say to draw your own, but I'm already taking tons of notes since the game doesn't keep track of everything you need to solve puzzles (which is fine) and even Resident Evil had a map, guys. Or just make it so shortcuts unlock both ways.3 found this helpful

This game is an absolute recommendation for anyone who likes horror games. I've played One Night multiple times over the years and I realised that I start to miss it as time passes. This game is an absolute must-play for any fan of the RPG Maker games. While some things don't hold up as well as they did many years ago, there's passion in this game that is rarely seen nowadays. One Night has unbeatable atmosphere and it's exactly that atmosphere that carries the entire game. Exploring the station feels tense and evading the monsters becomes increasingly difficult the further you go. While I did notice some minor hiccups and bugs through my playthrough, nothing really took me away from this wonderful experience. Overall, for a free game that takes only 2 hours to beat, you owe it to yourself to play One Night. It's a special experience.
