One Night 2: The Beyond

Again I am a massive jerk, and I am sorry, because this is obv made with love and effort and time and is FREE so by all means go for it if it looks cool to you, but I've played too many cool free horror games that do better to feel good about recommending this. It's a step up from the first in tons of ways. The combat system, while simple, is effective. The game rewards you for searching and offers you two protags to play the game through with differing loadouts and abilities. The scares work and there's greater variety in the locations so it's easier to find your way around. But still, like the first, there is no map. And again it's not that the game is that huge but enough of it blends together that if you ever get stuck and forget exactly where to go or what to do you can get lost easily, and/or be stuck trudging back and forth avoiding the same respawning monsters that move erratically. The other part might just be that I have a smooth brain but the puzzles seem really obtuse and not in a good way. For one the dev really likes math so get ready for that lol, but also some of the locks require entire words and the clues you're given are so clumsily worded it's really hard to u…

One Night 2: The Beyond builds up on every single aspect of the first game. The first One Night was a fantastic experience on its own, however, this sequel blows it out of the water in the opening moments quality-wise. While the atmosphere and the setting are vastly different from the first game, you can feel the same amount of love was put into this one. What's truly impressive is that every single aspect of the game was improved - the combat system is now actually fun, the exploration is even more rewarding and the puzzles are great. Combined with 2 playable characters with 2 different stories, this is a game that can truly be replayed. With its short duration and a free price tag, One Night 2: The Beyond is an absolute must. The world sometimes seems to have forgot what it means to have a sequel done right.

One Night 2: The Beyond is not only a pretty good RPG Maker horror game and resident evil/alone in the dark clone, but it's also a very good sequel to the first game. Now it’s time for the story. Mairstone Manor on the surface it looks like any other old mansion, but this is no ordinary home its nickname is the beyond for anyone who enters there is never to return, with many mysterious deaths and disappearances have happened over the years, now it lays abandoned. But sometimes people do venture not believing the rumors that it is a cursed place and these two people are no different, a Detective searching for a missing person and a horror writer trying to get inspiration. Both venture into the mansion, but what awaits them is something beyond their wildest nightmares. Okay then the likes, the story is very good it has a bit of a lovecraftian feel to it like the previous game, although the story feels a little more inspired by the original alone in the dark then Resident Evil. After playing One Night, I was happy to see that many of the issues I had with the previous game were fixed in this version. This has been a really fun experience and the story was enthralling! I intend on playing the third in the series as well. Interesting find and am glad to have played these! :) Admittedly I had to look up the solution to the desk combination lock, as I did not assume from the get-go that the lock was 55 digits as opposed to the conventional 40 digits I assumed the combination was for .-.

RPG Maker strikes again! One Night 2: The Beyond is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel JRPG ripoffs spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school fan fiction. Like all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. In this case, One Night 2: The Beyond is more of a adventure/puzzle game than an RPG, and the developer has made the somewhat noble decision to make this template flip completely free, although they were a little dishonest by describing it as the sequel to the "critically acclaimed" "One Night", which is also an RPG Maker asset flip.
