Periphery Synthetic

It's roaming, Roaming, with a capital 'R'. Beautifully empty. For me It's vivid childhood memories of playing Novagen's [i]Mercenary[/i] on an Atari 130XE. A few dots, a few lines forming a horizon. What's past it? Probably more enigmatic dots and lines. Let's get there anyway, rinse and repeat. Fills time, fills imagination, built my minimalism. Exploring my first cave on Alpha Periphery C was a great experience. Claustrophobic. You can't see it but yes, the water's there. That's how much of a believer I am. I held my breath.

It doesn't aim to be a fully fledged and satisfied "gaming experience". So if you go in looking for that, like I was (to some extent), you'll be disappointed. But it delivers something unique. Essentially, this is a roaming game. That's all you do, you roam over a few infinite, abstract landscapes. What makes it unique is the sound design. Everything in the world emits its own sound, mostly terrain shape and materials (more on them later) emits a certain sound, plus some more global directional cues. It's nothing very "in your face", but it makes it quite immersive. This is not my case, but I've seen the game get quite a bit of attention from "blind" people. It seems to be designed with such accessibility in mind, and that's great - though I cannot judge how well it plays with such constraints. Wonderful game, I'm looking forward to playing more. It's very retro, and very relaxing. As others have mentioned it is blind accessible and you can even fully black out the game in the settings, though you may need a screen reader on to take full advantage of that. With visuals on, though, it feels like a love letter to early 80's arcade games or Atari games, making the most of a few pixels and your imagination.

Truly unique gaming experience - unlike any game you've played before. I keep coming back to it and it keeps getting better. Highly recommended. And if your eyes get tired or if you don't like the graphics, just switch them off and play audio-only!

lovely, relaxing and beautiful

Very interesting and refreshing game! I am still quite at the beginning it seems (22% of milestones - 30 minutes in full game + ~30 minutes in demo), anyway have to say it surprised me - very nicely. At first I was quite confused, how to navigate or that there are is no HUD/indicators. But then, once I realized its more about the sound than visuals, and that it is best to mainly just listen and react accordingly to "music" changes, it felt very refreshing and relaxing. I have tried in past few games incorporating sound / music / beats into gameplay, but never before one where it would be this much important - and this much precise! I would expect this game may not be to everyone's taste, regardless I would recommend for almost everyone to at least give it a try. + there is Demo!
