The Heaven sends a Devil’s army to the ground, commanding them to destroy the corrupted city. It was the wandering knight who saved the city that was on verge of destruction. On one night, with the star so bright in the sky, the knight was guided outside by a mysterious voice. The voice that called to the knight was known as the God of a Star, and the God bestowed a pure girl in his care. From then on, the wandering knight decides to settle down in the city, and start a new life as a father of the girl.

It would be the understatement of the century to say that I wanted to like this game. There was so much I could forgive. Terrible translations, cut content, unstable port, general old-game wonkiness. However, this "modern port" released in 2004 couldn't do window sizes right. WINDOW SIZES. Have fun choosing between gameboy-sized screen, or a resolution-changing screen that may or may not work with some modern screens, will stretch pixels (4:3 game on 16:9 screen), and also move any open windows all over the place. Even trying to work around this with third party software did not help. The game window resists being resized, and the game detects being put into borderless mode and reacts by changing the screen resolution. I can't recall any other game resisting size changes this actively. It's like the suffering is intentional, and you're not allowed to bypass it. How could this port be worse than running the older beta in DosBox? I mean, sure, 2004 may be before the release of the iPhone, but it's a 4 years after computers were already able to emulate the Playstation at full speed. This game is both frustrating and yet addicting. It's easy to play in the background whilst watching something. It can become monotonous with the monthly schedule routine, but I can't stop trying to get new endings. Even getting the farmer ending after hours of grinding wasn't that bad since it was an ending I somehow hadn't gotten before. Even "lesser" endings are still somehow fulfilling; so no endings upset me. Unless it's the Cube one. Fck Cube. I'd recommend getting it on sale if you like grinding for a variety of different endings and can tolerate the older art style. Oh, but if you play the game with sound off, get ready for sound effects to ear blast you.
Unfortunately, Princess Maker 2 hasn't stood the test of time, as much as the people behind Refine and Regeneration have tried their best to make the game work in present day. The gameplay simply felt awkward, and the interface wasn't configured to match newer computers in the first place. Also, the translations were just prickly and difficult to digest. I can read English and Chinese, and I must say that the scripts could use a lot more refining, pun absolutely intended. The Chinese characters looked out of place inside the boxes. The English words would look nicer in a different font type. Stick to Volcano Princess and Magical Princess, because they are far better.
Fun and not so complicated. Good game!
Just like the old game it was. Shall I call it childhood memories?
