About Project Mercury

✦ AI summary

Project Mercury is a brutal neon-soaked action game that constantly shifts between on-foot combat, hoverbike racing, vertical climbing, and free-fall sections across eight intense stages. Face nine punishing bosses, switch between three weapon modules, and experience retro arcade gameplay elevated by stunning pixel art and chiptune soundtrack.

Set in a bleak neon future, Project Mercury puts you on foot, on a hoverbike, up skyscrapers, and down bottomless pits, as you exterminate a threat of unknown origin!

Game Features
  • Eight stages that will put you on foot, riding on a hoverbike, scaling skyscrapers, and floating down chasms.
  • State-of-the-Art high fidelity graphics at a 256x224 native resolution.
  • A rich soundtrack that only five-channel chipmusic can provide.
  • Nine boss battles to make your blood boil.
  • Three weapons modules to help you on your mission.
  • Battery-powered save features to keep your progress.

There are some great ideas in it, but it is hard to get the hang of it.

A sluggish and amateurish idea, probably a student project, that shouldn't be marketed. As a learning project, I can give it credit because it was able to implement many systems that can be encountered in most side-scrolling-type games. I cannot really give props in anything else. The soundtrack is generic but works. The art is bland, as is the overall sound. Everything feels unfocused and blurry with no real soul. The player movement looks and feels janky. Also, the playable character is way too big compared to the rest of the environment, making moving and shooting awkward. The gameplay is especially boring. There's some enemy and weapon variety, but not enough to make a big impact. Because of the janky movement and the overall bad scaling of the environment, you are going to spend some time retrying some levels, making it an even more unfun experience. In this type of game the player is expected to be progressing at a much faster rate than you will find yourself in.
