About Raatihuone

In Raatihuone, the old city hall, the player takes on the role of a janitor who is tasked with fixing the city hall clock. After fixing the clock the player is transported to the past and has to solve puzzles in order to find the way back home.

The game aims to teach and tell the history of Kajaani city hall through interactive gameplay. While exploring the site throughout the eras, the player can learn many interesting tidbits about the history and the different stages of the city hall. Players will learn how the city hall operated and how it used to look throughout its’ history.

The game environment was modeled in co-operation with the Kainuu Museum and Finnish museum association and utilized old pictures, photogrammetry and documents to accurately match the 30’s and 60’s.

The development of Raatihuone is part of Stories to games project which is coordinated by the Finnish Museum Association and funded by European Social Fund.

Raatihuone is a free VR explorer game that is also edutainment. It worked on my Index and HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok, was not understandable. The Voice over and text are in Finnish. Using trial and error while reading the pictograms they had, was able to figure out what to do. You move by fixed point teleports. You have some objects to pick up and find and some chores to do. You are travelling through time using some objects. Objects that you need to pick up or find are glowing. CONS: Does Not work on Quest 3 via Steam Link, the controllers don't work. Try it, if you understand Finnish or looking for a VR experience. Tarvitsee ehdottomasti toisenkin tavan liikkua, hyvä sisältö jää teleportaation ollessa ainoa vaihtoehto tutkimatta.

Virtual tour with a twist of time travel in a local town hall. Completely in Finnish (minus some Latin I guess) so I would recommend against downloading if you don't understand the language at all. I noticed some heavy stuttering going on with hands when an interactable object is being hold.

"Raatihuone" is barely a game, it's a walking sim showing off Kajaani city hall in Finland. It's put here on Steam, not to be a game, but thrusting a museum exhibit at gamers. This isn't making museums better, it's making gaming worse. All you do here is look at a 3D recreation of a historical building and click around a few simple, pointless minipuzzles (just enough to make this count as a "game", but no more than that). And before we all say, "Well it's just a building, it's not doing any harm, what's the problem?", let's take a step back. What if every curated historical building got a 3D representation like this dumped on Steam. There would be literally thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of garbage museum pieces glutting the store. This instance has no value for gamers, how much less would thousands of them have? And real game developers, amateurs especially who already struggle to find people to play their games, have to compete with this museum/art junk to get an audience for their games. It's harmful to those developers. It's harmful to us gamers, too, because we need to work to filter this stuff out to find those genuinely made games. There's no Eng…
