About Railroad X

Railroad X is more than just a Railroad Simulation. With Railroad X you can build your own railroad world in a dimension, which is almost impossible to realise in real model railroad: wide layouts with driveways and vehicles of all kinds – with cars and buses from all railroad eras. Whether you are a fan of steam trains or high speed railways, the limitations that exist when creating a model railway do not apply to the world of virtual railways.

With Railroad X you can build complex railway worlds on your PC or notebook and it is possible to control trains as a train driver. Of course you can control the entire rail traffic with a sophisticated signal system. Build train consists from steam, diesel and electric locomotives, passenger and freight cars. Railroad X offers a beautifully designed user-friendly interface, that puts many functions intuitively in scene. The new 2D plan transforms the layout top view in an artful yet clear drawing like the experienced model railroaders know it from trade magazines.

With virtual Railroad X, your trains will pass through landscapes whose appearance changes according to the time of day and local weather conditions, thus providing an extraordinarily life-like atmosphere. Additionally, there are animated figures and animals enlivening the scene. Besides cows and horses, fishes and birds, you have animated travellers and passersby.

Railroad X has a long history. The prototype of this software, EEP – Eisenbahn.exe, was created by Software Underground in 1998 and then continuously developed and enhanced each year. Since version EEP 4, the Publisher TREND and Soft Pro have been responsible for the development. In 2012, the founders of the program were responsible for the most extensive revision of the software since version EEP 3. After a year of hard work, they succeeded in creating a new version with Railroad X, which includes important features like a new grapical user interface, animated figures and interactive cabs.

There's several problems with this program that makes it NOT worth spending time. The graphics are bad bad bad. The PDF manual seems to be written by a person with a bad understanding of the English language. The logic is faulty, for example you can only lay track in one direction or else it will be crooked and then you have to go into a properties box to straighten it out. There's lots of other bugs and too many "manual" work-arounds. The game maker must ask: what is a computer good for? Because as of now, it's not good for this game. Don't waste your time.

I've been using EEP since version 7, loved using the software very much. Sadly, i don't know what they have done with version 10 and above but it looks yuck, to say the least. What this software now produces looks like someone complained the surface texture looked too flat and clinical. I can't now produce anything that i can actually call good to look at, no matter what i try. I must now add a correction, i don't know what happened but the fault i had was not down to the software. I must apologize to EEP.

This is not the game I thought it would be. For me it is much more. It is a simulation of rail design and engineering exclusive of commercial business enterprise and competition. It is a simulation that is part system engineering and part artistic creativity. I do recommend this game for those who enjoy letting the imagination go wild, and also enjoy watching the end product.

If you are looking for software to design, create and run your own virtual model railway, then this is for you. If you are looking for a train simulator that you can jump aboard a train and drive, then this is probably not for you. Even though most of the model designs for rolling stock, and scenery are German, it is still a great program for those looking to use their creativity. I have found the learning curve a bit steep at times, but I am making progress, and enjoying the sense of achievement I get when I master a new element. A complex, but fantastic program for the model railway enthusiast who can build a truly massive virtual layout over time. A comprehensive manual is available for download, and some really useful video tutorials in English are available by Rudy on Youtube. If you have some spare time to master all the bells and whistles this program contains, then this is for you.

I think I misunderstood this game from its screenshot, and I missed the return window when I realised this.
