A charming and fast-paced classic that still holds up today! Samurai Aces is a fantastic introduction to Psikyo’s signature arcade style. The game is easy to pick up but surprisingly challenging, with short stages, aggressive enemy patterns, and intense boss fights that keep you constantly engaged. Each character has unique shots and bombs, which adds great replay value and encourages experimentation. The pacing is one of the game's biggest strengths — it never wastes your time. Runs are quick, making it perfect for both casual sessions and score-chasing attempts. The difficulty ramps up nicely, and the randomized elements help keep repeated playthroughs fresh. Visually, the colorful feudal-Japan-meets-steampunk aesthetic gives the game a lot of personality, and the character interactions between stages are charming and humorous. The soundtrack is also catchy and fits the arcade atmosphere perfectly. If you enjoy classic arcade shooters, especially Psikyo-style games with tight gameplay and high replayability, Samurai Aces is absolutely worth playing. A simple but very addictive shoot 'em up that laid the foundation for many great titles that followed. Highly recommended!

Samurai Aces, developed by Psikyo, is the foundation of what would become staples in their shmup games. With a unique style inspired by the Sengoku period, it presents an art style full of expressive, distinctive characters reminiscent of games like Sonic Wings. Like many arcade games of its era, Samurai Aces can be brutally difficult. Enemy bullets can feel random at times, and success often depends on how well the player can route the stages. Memorization of enemy patterns is more important than reflexes, and a mix of slow bullets with faster ones can make later stages highly challenging—but that’s part of the appeal. Once you understand the patterns, it’s highly satisfying to see gradual improvement. I understand this is a re-release by a different company, but as far as I’m aware, it is identical to the previous version available here on Steam. If you are a fan of classic shmups, Samurai Aces is a worthy addition to your collection. A few cons about this release are the lack of a training mode or save states for practice. It’s a very straightforward port with the bare minimum, and considering shmups often require constant practice, it would be nice if training options were a…

I only bought this game to complete the collection. The game I really wanted to get during this second publishing was TENGAI (Samurai Aces II). The port is good, by the way. No glitches or what have you.
