About Sea Dogs

Sea Dogs is an epic role-playing game for the pirate in all of us. Return to the age of sail as a young captain looking to make a name in the world. Develop your character from humble beginnings and rise to control all of the islands for your country or yourself. You can give your allegiance to one of three countries or choose to serve only yourself as a swashbuckling pirate. Build your wealth and reputation and use it to acquire bigger ships and better crewman. Hire other captains to join you in attacking and capturing other ships or forts. Where you go and what you do is up to you. The choices in Sea Dogs are endless, and so is the fun.

Play as one of four sides (British, French, Spanish, or Pirate) or change allegiances during the game.
Nonlinear campaign allows players to choose quests or play the game any way they want.
20 different ship types to choose from, from small boats to large battleships.
Location-specific ship damage allows you to send their sails up in flames, bring the mast crashing to the deck, or shoot holes in the hull.
Realistic and dynamic wind and weather effects as well as day and night cycle.

20 Hours in: Just like I remember it. Open World on the High Seas and not much in the way of side quests. The ship combat and controls were revolutionary at the time. Easily a top 10 favorite game. 40 Hours in: One of the best open world games ever made. There are lots of times I am left "wanting more" from the game, Remember it came out in 2000 and most of those ideas had not even been considered at the time. 60 Hours in: I had forgotten how short this game was, the lack of side quests shortens the game tremendously. There is lots of replay value because of the 3 alternate endings (totaling 4 endings) and the open world layout. Summary: 40 hours is far more than enough time for obtaining more than wealth enough to do anything you wish in the game and be 3/4 through the story. I would estimate speed runners for the one play through would be 25 hours of playtime. Completing the game in 18 hours is plausible, although very, very, difficult. Spending the time to increase your rank is highly advised. 60 hours included lots of distracted sailing (squirrel!), 50k in gold is the richest of the rich; when you reach 100k, you can do anything you want for as long as you want and be surp…

Bad optimization, glitchy graphics, loss of original font. Good only for nostalgy.

I played this game upon its release. I loved it very much. But I hated the bugs. It is surprising to see that most of them are still here in 2026 lol I found it interesting that there are four quest lines. Back in 2000, I found only three (by the nations). I chose France. Getting married with a pretty lady, governor's daughter, was tempting. Then, now, I finished as an English nobleman. Finally, I read about the pirate quest line. I recalled I tried to finish it back then but bugged fight with the pirate leader on Manowar was a disaster, and I gave up. Funny how easy the fight is now. In any case, the game is great, including English voiceover. But be wary of bugs. When finish the game with one nation, uninstall, delete the folder, even restart, and then reinstall and start over, otherwise the map will be altered based on your last walkthrough. Then, during the pirate line, check tavern master on Grey Sails for the first letter to attack Isla Balena, and then one-legged dude to get the second one to attack Grande Avilla. Save game (manually) before taking and after taking the quests. It will save you a lot of time. Good luck.

It helps when you start playing the story to do it in sequence. You don't need to play the story to have fun.

The play screen doesn't line up with the monitor. I tried every resolution but it is cut off on the bottom, which means that I can't read anything. Perhaps this is based on playing it on a laptop, but the game is unusable. I tried every (visible) option on the "Options" menu. Based on other reviews, I guess the game used to be good. This port is not.
